Al Bowlly was one of the first British artists who could seriously be called a pop idol - he was a crooner in the heyday of the dance band era of the '30s, whose effortless romantic vocals made him a true superstar of his era. In a career spanning less than 15 years before he was killed in a London air raid in 1941, he made almost 1000 recordings, and made the successful shift in the mid-'30s to conquer the US market as well. There is still an enormous amount of interest in Bowlly's work among nostalgia buffs of all ages, fuelled by TV documentaries. This terrific value 100-track 4-CD anthology brings not only some of his biggest hits but also some of his lesser-known material than has not been over-represented on previous collections, and will be an excellent medium for those discovering his work for the first time to achieve an entertaining overview of his matchless style and talent, and covering his recording career, from his first recordings in 1927 to one made a couple of weeks before his death in April 1941. Review: Brilliant album - I bought this for my cousin who was absolutely delighted to find four cds featuring a hundred sounds. There were some that he had never heard which added to his delight, Review: A much cheaper version - This title has been reissued under the Music For Pleasure label and retitled : Al Bowlly Centenary Celebratio . The selection is good, with only a few of the most common songs appearing. Additionally, the sound quality is like that of the Vocalion remasters. The only quibble I have is that the only information about each track is the year of release - no orchestra name provided, but as a budget CD it is an excellent bargain. 1. Love is the sweetest thing (1932) 2. Dark eyes (1939) 3. Careless (1940) 4. Goodnight sweetheart (1931) 5. Over the rainbow (1940) 6. Moon love (1939) 7. Close your eyes (1934) 8. When you wear your Sunday blue (1940) 9. A man and his dream (1939) 10. What do you know about love (1939) 11. Marie (1938) 12. You're pretty as a picture (1939) 13. Romany(1939) 14, Small town (1939) 15. Dreaming (1940) 16. A little rain must fall (1940) 17. Give me my ranch (1940) 18. I'm madly in love with you (1939) 19. I miss you in the morning (1939) 20. It was a lover and his lass (1940) 21. Blow blow thou winter wind (1940) 22. Au revoir but not goodbye (1939) 23. South of the border (1939) 24. Bella bambina (1940) 25. Out of words...
There are recording flaws and the first disc was a little scratched, but the music is so wonderful and the collection so great that I still give it five stars.

What a dream
I’m in heaven when I listen to Al Bowlly and the beautiful bands he’s featured with, i.e. Ray Noble & Lew Stone and their bands, mostly. Heard him from a child, but suddenly looked him up and found these gems on Amazon. So pleased.

I played this through and could not understand how I knew so many of these songs.
If you've heard a couple of Al Bowlly"s big hits then buy this set and be blown away by just how many great songs he made. The bands he sang with were so good. Yes there is hiss and crackle on some of the recordings and some of the tracks are louder than others so have the remote handy or to heck with the neighbours. None of this detracts from the wonderful music, in fact it helps transport you to that time. The bands/orchestras were all excellent. The brass sounded just as it should. The arrangements and harmonies are just beautiful and Al's voice is the best. If you like any music from the big band era, buy this, you will not be disappointed.

Really good! Very good transfers
Really good! Very good transfers! My only complaint is the surface noise to "Blue Moon"; it's quite disturbing. Other than that, I'd say this is a really nice collection of Al's music. This CD contains some of the alternate versions of the hits Al sang(I think someone already mentioned this). The booklet contains a nice brief story of Al's life and the dates the song was recorded and what orchestra backed Al.

The Al Bowlly Collection 1927-1941
Está muy deficientemente grabado. Creo que con las técnicas de sonido actuales se puede conseguir una mejor edición. Lo lamento.
