Exo Terra Desert Sand, 10-Pound, Red for All Breed Sizes

The bearded dragon enjoys his sand and being able to move it around. I felt the cost was a bit high but the dragon loves it.

I am not sure what I was expecting from black sand, but this sand is incredibly black. I mixed it with some coconut substrate and even though there were equal parts substrate to sand, everything is black now. When the sand is wet it can spread the black coloring (sand, not a separate dye) so some of my terrarium occupants have black sand on them. However, the black sand actually makes things (plants, shells, hermit crabs, etc.) stand out more, and overall, the cage looks less messy. It is very easy to spot moving critters on the black background, and it seems to help trap some of the light that spills into the cage from the heat lamp. The sand did not have any clumps of non-sand material, and when wet it turns into sand that can be molded, rather than turning into wet mud. I also purchased 2 bags of this sand and both were of consistent quality. *This sand is being used for a hermit crab terrarium. It is mixed with a coconut substrate, and will remain moist until changed. It is also under a heating lamp at most times. I will update with any significant changes.

I ordered this because the usual Australian sand has become over priced. Looks great and still natural. Im going to buy this brand from now on.

I do really love this substrate mix. The color stands the test of time, even enduring my beardie's heat bulb and uvb lights - so that's a plus! However, I mix this along with a coconut mixture since the sand makes it really dusty inside her enclosure. This helps when she's burrowing to prevent too much dust being kicked up into her breathing space

Perfect product. For anyone curious of it and where you want to use it its versatile. But do NOT put it in water or any aquariums if you want your aquatic plants and aquatic pets to live. Theres a reason aquatic sand exists this product specifically comes from an arid environment and is only meant to stay dry and is for reptiles who have a natural dry habitat. Do not use in aquariums yes your going to find that its got some minerals in it not safe for fish or any aquatic species its not meant for consumption or water its literally sand sifted from dirt in an arid location where theres not much water. Purchase aquarium safe sand not reptile sand.
