Famous Five 21 Book Complete Classic Edition Gift Set

Wow, I wasnt expecting these books to be brand new but they are! Over the moon. Haven't took the plastic wrap off as they're an Xmas gift but everything looks to be as it should. Made up!! X

I read all of the Famous Five books as a kid (my mum had kept a complete set of original hardbacks from her own childhood) and I remember the 80’s TV series well. Whilst I completely understand why new editions of Blyton’s stories are being edited to reflect modern language and culture, I am so glad that I took the opportunity to buy this set before the original versions became obsolete. It has been a joy to re-read them as they were, as funny and outdated as they may seem to others. A complete trip back in time.

With the price at something like 80% off I decided to move this from its long stay on my saved list to my basket. I loved reading (and watching) the Famous Five series when I was a kid. Reading them now is very nostalgic to me. The description says that it is “classic text”, and this is true in that the Woke Brigade have not got their hands on it. Two characters (an Aunt and a member of the gang) keep their names, whereas in Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway tree the delicate flowers from that cult have changed similar names so as not to “offend”. The only changes to the text I have noticed is simply converting the money mentioned from pre-decimalisation to post-decimalisation. That’s no big deal. As for the physical product itself. All 21 Famous a five novels in one stiff cardboard case, all arrived in good condition. Recommend for all Enid Blyton/Famous Five fans.

I was bought various of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books when a child and I still enjoy them. Follow the adventures of Julian, Dick, George (Georgina but she wants to be thought of as an honorary boy), Anne and Timmy the dog on their summer holidays from school when they make amazing discoveries and thwart villains. The stories are set in a mythical place on the Dorset coast, where Blyton loved to holiday herself, and various places in the vicinity. Blyton started writing these stories in the middle of the Second World War and produced a total of 21 approximately annually. She also wrote a series of short stories involving the Famous Five. The stories very much reflect Blyton’s own experiences era and social class: upper middle and comfortable, with people to do the cleaning and cooking. The children are in the 11-15 age range (they never grow older!) and attend boarding school, travel by bicycle, train and car and live in a world where people communicated using letters, telephone calls and telegrams. The intrigue and adventure in the stories is, however, timeless. Many teenagers today (and adults!) will enjoy them.

Great set of books. Reading them again, first time since childhood. Very enjoyable.

I have some of the original books in this series. The illustrations in these editions are the same as of old. The text is mostly the same, but, a jarring note is refering to the children wearing jeans. They wore shorts most of the time, and, certainly in Anne's case a skirt. As the illustrations are the original ones, they clearly show the children wearing the clothes from the original text.

Read these books many years ago and loved them. My nine year old granddaughter is engrossed in them. Wonderful to see a new generations imagination opening up with these great kids stories

My wife got these for our daughters and reads them these stories every night. The box is high-quality and the books have the old artwork which is really cool and nostalgic.

The books are fine, all 21 are there. But does not come in compilation box, just wrapped in plastic. This edition comes with old style illustrations on cover and inside. I like that over the more modern editions, because the language and the setting of the stories matches the illustration style very well.

多読のSSSサイトで紹介されていたfamous fiveの全21巻コレクションです。 ざっくり計算で約100万語、この価格で読めます！安い！ 読みやすさレベルは4.0-5.0です。 A to Z mysteries(3.5-4.5)がスラスラ読めるようになったので挑戦しましたが、ぐっと難しくなります。 1文1文が長くなり、ところどころ古めかしい表現が多いです。特に動詞が、不規則動詞で一瞬知らない単語に見えます。speedの過去形でspedとか。まあchoose-chose-chosenなどから想像つくので慣れたらいけます。kindleだと辞書機能があるので大丈夫でした。 1話の最初になかなか入り込めず、このシリーズを読む前にfamous five shortstoriesを2冊購入して、そっちはフルイラストつき、ちゃんと同じ作家さんの短めでとっつきやすいお話だったので、人名や性格などをしっかり理解して戻ってきて読みました。 時系列的にはshortstoriesはこの1巻のあとの話なので、ネタバレ(そんな大したものじゃないですが)が嫌ならこっちを先に読んでください。 1巻の途中まではついていくのに精一杯でアップアップしましたが、途中から緊迫してきて一気に面白くなり、先を読みたくてどんどん進みました。 古き良き冒険小説で、子供たちの個性も微笑ましく、子供から大人まで楽しめる作品だと思います。
