Will it power a 5tb external hd that is usb powered or will the hard drive need its own power supply?

It greatly depends on the physical size class used in your hard drive enclosure. If you have a slim drive, then it is a laptop hard drive and can be powered with USB. If your hard drive is very large and bulky, then likely it is a 3.5 inch hard drive used in desktops and usually will have an external adapter for you to plug in.
