If you use a paper mat or towel, how will the seed roots (i'm thinking of wheat grass specifically) reach down into the water?

I didn't like these trays. I prefer the UCandy Pack 10 Seed Sprouter Tray. These are poorly made and to deep.

As for the Wheat Grass...I grow it directly on the White tray, no paper. The roots will push through with no problem.

Question 2

Do these NOT require soil to grow microgreen sprouts? I see photos without soil.. If so, can someone explain that process please?

Yes, it's a No soil system and I love them. You sprinkle seeds on the white tray that has holes and put just a few drops of water in the green tray to create humidity. Keep them moist and when the roots start reach down through the white tray, start watering from below. While they are germinating, loosely cover with another green tray or towel. Once they germinate and get a little growth, uncover and give them some light. I have a window that gets 2 hours of sun. They don't need much.

I grow broccoli & wheat grass. Broccoli seeds are small and fall through, so I lay a damp paper towel down and put the seeds on that. I mist the seeds once to twice a day. For the wheat grass, no paper, just mist.

I had trouble growing sunflower and peas this way. I think the roots are thicker and couldn't get through. I soak these seeds, grow them in 2" foil trays with soil. (Some seeds require soaking)

Picture of 5 pack shows 2 different products. Which one is the set with 5 all-side mesh, 5 water trays and 5 lids?

There are several options, some with lids and some without. The 5 pack, with lids is 25. I didn't like the way the lids fit and the green trays were deeper than I liked.
