How do I know how many amps my lamp requires?

Most lamps draw very little amperage. The switch is rated for 3 amps I believe so you should be fine. However since inquiring minds want to know here's the formula. Simply divide the wattage of the bulb by the voltage. In the U.S. the operating voltage for most household appliances is 110 volts a.c. So a 60 watt bulb divided by 110 volts equals 0.54 amps (60/110=.0.54)

The switch comes with detailed and clear instructions, but Read Them Carefully. I recommend that you read them all the way through a couple of times. My 14 year old daughter installed this with my supervision. Took about 10 minutes including "teaching" time. In summary, you have to cut part of your existing lamp cord to install this. You need a screwdriver and a sharp knife.

Which blade is the hot one, large or small one? Which wire is the hot wire, the smooth one or the ribbed one.

The hot wire is the smooth one, the neutral wire is the ribbed one. The hot wire gets cut and stripped and attached to the screws, the neutral wire remains uncut and runs through the switch.
