Essential for novice guitarist, great gizmo for a pro.
What a great gizmo. Plug it into your guitar, plug headphones into it, power on and that's it, you've got your own private jam / practice studio. There's also effects that I'm yet to use so can't comment on these. The sound coming out of it is soft and pure, no distortions, but it depends a lot on the headphones. Perfect for novices who do not want to annoy people around them with the noise coming out of their guitar, but also for seasoned guitarists that want to jam a bit in privacy. Public service announcement : this will NOT make you a better guitar player. Apparently you need practice and practice and some more.

Great, authentic tones and analogue simplicity
I used to own a Vox Amplug 1 but sold it years ago to move on to digital app-based headphone amps like iRig. A child of the 70s, I've been missing the simplicity of things that just plug in and work - no phones, PCs or apps needed. I bought the 'Boutique' Amplug 3 on a bit of a whim and couldn't be happier. Vox has made numerous improvements to the Amplug including a rotating jack plug, built-in drum machine, multi-effects, tap tempo and dual channels. The clean channel sounds bright and clear but turning up the drive and volume dials adds plenty of growl and grunt. Switching to the second channel, tones range from classic rock to searing lead. I love it! The built-in effects are nice, with the option of dry, chorus, delay or reverb. You can also adjust the effects level in the mix. An AUX jack allows you to connect an external device such as a phone or laptop for recording or playback. I use it to access guitar lessons on my PC and play along, enjoying great stadium tones without disturbing anyone in the house with my guitaring incompetence. My favourite thing overall is the simplicity of these things. Simply add two AAA batteries (supplied), plug it in to your guitar's jack socket, connect headphones and switch it on for instant great tones.

Good for the price but frequently annoying
Given the price and size, it's amazing what this thing can do. You can sometimes get a surprisingly good tone out of it, but chords usually sound muffled and it only really shines with single notes. Plus you'd be surprised how annoying it is for all the controls on your amp to be on a tiny little box you can barely reach, and forget being able to see the controls if you have an underside input jack. You will have to take the amp out to change the settings. Which you will have to do frequently, every time you accidentally turn the effects on by brushing against your chair or bed. Plus there are loads of effects, so you have to cycle through them for ages just to get your clean tone back. Am I glad I got it? I don't know, probably. Playing electric guitar unplugged is a miserable experience, and it hampers your ability to improve because you're never sure if you have a good technique. Does it solve that problem? Sort of.

Simply doesn't work
It shuts itself off within minutes. Makes my American ultra sound like a'K' Pointless cheap feeling gimmick. I'm hoping the Fender Mustang headphone amp will fair better. Edit. Having received and used the Fender Mustang headphone amp for only a couple of hours, it feels an absolute cheek that vox have the shame to release this unit....buy cheap, buy twice.

Wonderful!
Two great channels! The clean channel sounds great with decent headroom even if you want to crank that gain knob. The drive channel with the gain low is perfect for classic rock tones and as you crank it, it can do a decent high gain sound. If you only want a high gain sound I would look at their other options but this is very versatile. Includes backing tracks and metronome with tap tempo. Included effects are fun to play with. This model can't do delay and reverb at the same time, but it's still a nice inclusion. There's also chorus, but I use that less. Fantastic value for a great practice tool. Throw it in a gig bag and you can play anywhere. This thing makes me want to get one of those travel electric guitars so I can play almost anywhere
