As a beginner I find instructions in dressmaking patterns can be confusing, so I bought this to support that and it is just right for my needs. Has a good section on tools and fabric types (fabric can be confusing). A good section on basic functional stitches, seams and hems. Large section on altering patterns and then the techniques on garment construction. Mostly aimed at dressmaking. Lots of step by step pics making it easy to see what to do. This is definitely a reference book, not a project book, but does have some projects you can do if you wish. If you are looking for a project book this might not be for you. If you are looking for a craft book, this may not be for you. If you want to know techniques to construct garments and alter them for a better fit, this is definitely a must buy. Review: Great book - Iโve been a huge fan of DK books for many years and my sons who are now in their late 20โs were brought up on DK books and in fact 90% of their book collection was DK. This sewing book didnโt disappoint, in good old DK style you get the larger than life colourful pictures with everything labelled and step by step explanations & instructions even a complete beginner would be able to get started straight away. I have been sewing for as long as I can remember but usually only made cushion covers, table cloths, curtains, duvet covers and clothes etc however last year Iโd taken quite an interest in quilting and as Iโve got a serger & also updated my old sewing machine for a much more modern one I thought Iโd treat myself to a new sewing book too. This DK book replaces several other sewing books I have and yet covers far more than what all of them put together covered, it covers the basics for everything you need to know to get started and more or if like me you simply want to be updated or freshen your memory this is the book to do it. Itโs by far one of my favourite sewing books and is the type of book you would go back to over and over again just for reference especially if you need to source a stitch type or embroidery pattern or foot etc that you havenโt used for some time this is a great book to have. Very pleased with my book.

Great book
This is a great book, diagrams very good, simple to follow. The only downside for me was the weight of it. Would definitely recommend.

Useful
As a former seamstress & keen amateur dressmaker/repurposer I got this to help with stuff I'm not sure about. There's a lot of things I do know but this covers almost anything you need, whether you are a total beginner or fairly experienced. The only thing I needed that wasn't included was altering clothes into smaller sizes.

Another DK Perfection! The photographed step by steps are tops
This is why DK is loved so much. Congratulations on a top book. A manual for sure, but not at all daunting, rather one you can't wait to reach for, knowing "they got this"!

Itโs now my sewing bible.
I am a complete beginner at sewing. I found all the different material types and what needles to use in your machine daunting. This book explains it all. I also didnโt know what the selvedge or warp etc, this clarifies it all. It even explains how to line up your pattern. Then all the stitching, from seams, hems etc. I could go on. It is the Best Buy I have made. I will be referring to this as my sewing bible. I totally recommend it. Itโs also got some lively patterns to practice with.

Great book for beginners!
As a beginner, I have been overwhelmed with the information that can be found online and wanted to find a comprehensive guide about sewing. Before buying it, I have been pretty much self-taught and have tried to work on some easier patterns (which would not go as expected). After buying this book, I haven't started a new project without looking into how elements of the pattern should be done. In my opinion, this book is a great beginner book that shows step-by-step how to achieve certain techniques. I am very happy that I bought it, and would without a doubt recommend it to other beginners. If you're more skilled, this might be a little to basic for you, but you can still use it as a guide on how to achieve certain things as the book is split into beautiful sections that make it easy to find what you need.

Surprisingly in-depth and useful, and full of visuals!
Not only is this a quality made book, but it's full of beautiful and useful visuals that really drive home the techniques and lessons the book teaches. I've been through a few sewing books and was disappointed at most of them. This is probably the best sewing book I could find for any beginner. In fact, even people who have mastered the basics could learn from this book. It has some great projects in it and has a picture or illustration to accompany every detail - super important to someone who learns visually like me!

Fantastic book
At least for a rookie like me this is a fantastic book, it covers everything, and it is all described in both text and clear color photos, they explain all kinds of sewing subjects and after each one you get an example of how to use it in the real world. They explain different kinds of fabrics, how to interpret a sewing pattern, how to use different seams, how to use interfacing and on it goes, you can find pretty much anything in this book, again a fantastic book.
