Sacajawea: Her True Story (Step into Reading, Step 4)

I got this book as a gift to my niece who was traveling to South Dakota for the summer. She lives in Florida and I wanted to introduce her to some of the culture in that state. This book is great for reading. Challenging vocabulary which is a good thing for children on grade level & above. Teaches some history and that's good for children too.

I bought this for my daughter because it had some historical data and the names where done in phonetics. My daughter is 6 and reading on a 3rd to 4th grade level. We loved the book. Plan to buy more.

My kindergarten daughter needed to read a book about Sacajawea to fulfill requirements for a scouting badge. Though she reads at an advanced level (3rd grade), she is only a kindergartener, and this book was basic enough yet interesting and informative.

I was expecting the Disney-ized Sacajawea, I think. Since Disney hacked up Pocahontas (figuratively), I have been leery of reading children's biographies of Native Americans. This is quite good. It goes with our "westward expansion" learning that we have concentrated on all summer. The illustrations are stylized. and there's a map. This covers different material than the early reader about Lewis and Clark and the Prairie Dog for the President, but the reading level is close to the same. Why not get them both?

Sacajawea is a wonderful role model for young girls. A lovely book that follows the history of one of America's finest female figures. Lovely.

I realize to late that its audience was meant for much younger children!

My son's ages 4 & 6, enjoyed learning about Sacajawea. I thought it was perfectly worded for these two clever lads. It kept their attention and they enjoyed it. My six year old (an advanced reader for his age) could read this on his own with no problem at all.
