This review is for: TP-Link EAP225-Outdoor | Omada AC1200 Wireless Gigabit Outdoor Access Point | Business WiFi Solution w/ Mesh Support, Seamless Roaming & MU-MIMO | PoE Powered | SDN Integrated | Cloud Access & App I bought and have been using 2 of these for over 3 years. One is outdoors and the other is in my shop. They are both still working great! It took a bit to get them set up but the instructions were good and I got them up and running without issue. -Aesthetics —------- They look pretty good for what they are. They are plastic -Functionality —- They work great and function in all kinds of weather. -Value for price — They cost a bit more than other extenders but well worth it considering they still work after 3 years of use through rain, wind, snow and the heat of summers. -Ease of use —--- As with any Wi-Fi extender there is a bit of set up involved but once that's done it's easy to connect any Wi-Fi device as long as you have the password you create during setup. -Durability —------ It's plastic so it doesn't look as durable as it actually is. -Use over time— Both are still functioning well after over 3 years of continual use. Pros: Well worth every penny! Good signal, reliable, holds up and functions through all kinds of weather. Strong signal strength for a good decent distance. Cons: I don't really have any complaints I am fairly critical with my reviews, reserving; 5 stars only for products that I would highly recommend or would purchase again. 4 stars to products I like and work well but are less than perfect. 3 stars is for products that are barely usable. 2 Stars for products that I have returned or thrown away but are somewhat as described in the product description. 1 Star is for products that are falsely described in the product description and do not meet the needs of my purchase. Recently I bought a wifi security camera to keep an eye on my mailbox. Of course, since nothing ever goes the way you plan, my wifi signal didn't reach the camera once it was in place. I searched for ways to extend my outdoor wifi range and decided to give this TP-Link access point a try. My track record for Amazon purchases has not been great lately. In the last few weeks I bought a wireless door alarm for the mailbox that promised a 600 foot range but did not work 300 feet away, a highly rated pair of precision wire cutters that had blades that weren't aligned with each other, the aforementioned wifi camera that couldn't get a signal (not the camera's fault), a chainsaw bar and chain that didn't fit my chainsaw, a trail camera to keep an eye on the mailbox that ended up creating hundreds of corrupt videos and photos, etc. I was due for a win and I found it with this TP-Link EAP225-Outdoor access point. Setup and configuration was a breeze. I had recently bought a Netgear switch with PoE (Power over Ethernet) ports so I didn't need to use the included power adapter. I can now see video from the wifi camera stationed 250 feet up the driveway. My next purchase is a longer range wifi antenna to connect to the camera to give it a little more signal boost to get the highest resolution video from it. My only concern about this AP is the longevity. I've only had it running for a few hours and we're expecting temperatures in the 90's this week. I'm cautiously optimistic of how well it will hold up in this Georgia heat and humidity. Being marketed as an outdoor AP, I would assume it's built to handle the summer heat, rain, and freezing winter weather but I've learned to take nothing for granted. I'll try to remember to come back and update this review occasionally but for now, it says what TP-Link says it does and I'm a happy customer.

These models and model numbers are confusing because they are all grouped together and it is difficult to tell what exactly each does and doesn't do. In this case I got the EAP225 Outdoor which *looks* like it is a wireless extender, which it isn't...exactly. The EAP225 does extend the wireless signal, but only when you can reach it by an ethernet cable. If the router has no outputs, or there is no physical connection available to where this should be extended (barn, for example) this won't work and in fact isn't even configurable. You can't connect to it's web interface until it is physically connected to the router via ethernet. But... When it is connected to the router it works and works well. It works so well that when I was only setting it up, and it was sitting on the floor just next to the router, the signal outside was already better. And the web interface is pretty versatile and east to use. You can even (and SHOULD) have more than one SSID broadcast. This is nice because very often the main SSID will be a duplicate of the router's, or of other extenders, and without a second SSID you can no longer connect to this extender to configure it, or at least it is very difficult to know which you are currently connected to. But if you add another SSID like "tplinkconfig1" you can always connect to that and configure it. Having POE is also useful, it makes installing and powering this outdoor unit very easy as you don't need a separate power connection. But again, it would have been nice to have a built-in ethernet switch to be able to daisy chain these around a property. Or at least be able to connect them wirelessly. So as it is, you will need a separate router connection for each, or add another switch to accommodate each of these extenders. But at a bare minimum, if you only connect this to your router with a 3' ethernet cable, the signal is already better and makes this unit worth it. If you have the ability to run ethernet all over the property, even better.

This is a professional level access point for instant mesh and extending purposes. This works really well for home set up, farm properties or off grid systems that have power (solar or wind) It DOES requires setup with the TP-Link OMADA control software. The software controller version is free for up to 1500 AP’s but does takes a bit of a learning curve to set up correctly, but when it is, it is super fast broadcasts a great distance. Mesh setup with 2 or more really extends your business or property coverage and keeps the speeds as high as possible. The traffic roaming hand off, means you can walk around on a call or video chat and it hands you off to the stronger/closest AP seamlessly (without the call weakening as you get further from the original connection AP and thus requiring you to re connect to a stronger access point with the same SSID manually) It comes with a Power over Ethernet adapter so you do not need power where the AP is located outside. The power travels down the Ethernet cable from your router or switch. My neighbour and I share a Starlink dish service located on their property. I have one of these EAP225 (AC1200) connected to a Starlink Ethernet adapter at their house. The AP is outside and located 350’+ from our off-grid house on our property. I have another EAP225 (AC1200) mounted on my house to make the jump. This is connected to the POE adapter and plugged into the WAN port of my Linksys 2.4G/5G router in my house. We get 120-200mbs everywhere in our house and property. I have other off-grid friends also looking to buy these to extend wifi to their shop or barn and mesh Starlink too. Highly recommend!

First of all, my experience with TP-Link customer service has been excellent, and most of their products (actually all but this one) has performed well and lasted long (tbh none of them has died yet in 2+ years beyond their excellent warranty coverage, of course except this one). Having said all that, this product was unique in offering what I wanted, an outdoor WiFi AC1200 (min) access point, that could work off PoE+ and allow for decent extension of the 5GHz range. Setup was easy, configuration easy. Only early issue I found was the Ethernet ingress point that protected the device from the elements was too narrow for most Ethernet cable, so I had to find the right size (and that did not exist, so I had to put some extra weather proofing around the ingress and tighten up the hole a bit). Performance was less than impressive. Even standing right next to it, and showing link speed (PHY rate of 866Mbps), on a Gigabit pipe, max spike I saw through this on file transfer was around 150 Mbps from a laptop. Connecting directly to the base router a TotL Netgear, I could get 500+ Mbps average with same setup otherwise. Coverage was one of the main reason, and it had poorer coverage than my internal base router. I.e. from outside the home at about 100 feet from this AP, I was getting better transfer rate and connection from my internal base router than this on the 5GHz channel. This made it very disappointing, as it failed to serve the main purpose. When roaming outside my home, I continued to stay connected to my base router's (supposedly) poor signal, than this outdoor AP's (surprisingly) poor signal on 5GHz. Last straw, it died less than a year into deployment. Good thing TP-Link customer service was excellent, and they replaced it with EAP-225v3 (indoor WAP). Yeah I took a bit of a hit on the price point, however value wise, EAP225v3 indoor WAP has been performing better than it claims on paper. This goes to show how great TP-Link products generally are. So, while I am providing an honest rating for EAP225 outdoor, because of the customer service experience, I am going to keep considering TP-Link for my next home network upgrade needs. (I hope Netgear reads this, because I am just about done with them, simply on the basis of their horrendous warranty and customer service experience.)

I see that the top-rated negative review claims you need a LAN connection for these to work, but that isn’t true. You need Omada-compatible devices and the software to properly configure them. In the case of the negative review, the user likely needs two of these devices. I have three on my property and plan to add another. I can clear a 400-foot gap and achieve over 100 Mbps on my phone, even with three 4K video streams running on the same SSID. I did have to preconfigure the device on my LAN to enable mesh mode, but once configured, it works well. In one instance, one of the three devices lost its memory, and I had to use another as a LAN access point to redownload the configuration. However, this issue only happened once. For the price, I’m impressed. Another primary purpose for these devices is to provide reliable internet across six acres for my mowers. I haven’t noticed any dead spots. (I live in the country, so RF interference is minimal.)

Pay CLOSE attention to this unit, how it works, and what it does before you buy it!! 1) Omada interface / controller - as normal, great concept but total trash to implement. I de-registered the software, wiped the initial setup and started over rather than trying to mess with it (its only good for multipoint administration from a central location IMHO) - IE: I did the stand alone fallback mode through a web interface and fixed the problem (much simpler setup) 2) NOT a true "wireless mesh" unit. Only some (mostly omada) wireless networks will work with this thing. My "netgear" router and this unit would not work together for a wireless AP setup. I have no problem with the wireless mesh unit at the other end of my home, it flawlessly synced to a wireless AP mode and didn't take 10 min to setup. (Thankfully I have a hardwire managed hub at that end of the house and just hardlined it). 3) Mounting and Antennas: This thing seems to be a "domed" signal. I have some true antenna mast on my property and with the 'default' antenna setup the signal actually went down at the 200' mark. I had to pull the unit back down, put the antenna horizontal at 70d from each other and then put it back up. This brought the signal back to the ground at the 200' mark and it seams to fade at 100' or so experiment with the signal before you buy the farm with it. Once up, rotate it in small increments (if possible) to get them right The unit is on a 20' mast above a horizontal metal roof, so I suspect a lot of ground-plane reflection. (IE: higher is NOT better with this unit). 4) Heat issue with signal? I have monitored the signal of this unit. At night with cooler temps the RSSI of my furthest camera is 50~60 and during the heat of the day it drops to 65~75 (at 72 my camera starts having streaming issues. once it is up and running it seems to be a pretty good unit, mine has an uptime right now of 15 days and I've seen zero notification errors on it.

Needed this to extend WiFi to an outbuilding that's about 200 feet away from my home. Setup was very easy and the new network worked right from the start. The range is very good, reaching further than I really expected. My installation is currently a bit wonky: the unit is located indoors, in a metal-clad building, temporarily taped to the glass window of a metal-clad garage door. And it still gives me a strong signal out to where I need it and even all around the building where it is located -- I did not expect that, as I thought my metal building would interfere with the signal. I expect the range to improve when I mount the unit properly on the outside of the building. Have had no problems with setup or network management. The unit has resumed working properly every time after any power interruptions. Highly recommended.
