Awesome backpack for a great price! Read for internal compartment review
OK, when I was choosing through a list of backpacks, this made the top 5 list along with other Targus styles (grove-dint like the zipper, ascend-dint like the outer compartment, brilliance-equally awesome.., and sport- too big). Compared to the other styles, this one does lack padding on the shoulder straps and the back. This does not bother me as the price was within my budget as a grad student. However, for those who value their laptop, I highly recommend purchasing a 'THIN and SNUG' sleeve for added padding(there's a $1000 equipment inside!! errrrrr duhhh), as I felt uneasy with the limited padding on the back and my old sleeve was just too big to crunch into its compartment. .Fits ideally for my 15.6" enclosed in a Etekcity Reversable Neoprene sleeve I bought for $6. The laptop compartment is located in the the back and has a thin padding with velcro to secure it (i dont use it and you have to pull the top back to access it. It is in the largest compartment big enough to fit 2 binders (2+1"), 1-2 text depending on size, couple folders and a big headphone. The middle compartment is smaller and can hold 1 binder/book. I put my camera, comp. charger, mouse and has slots for cards and other smaller items in this. The third compartment(outermost) is much much smaller. Can hold couple pens, phone charger, keys, gum, candies. Despite the limited padding, its very comfortable!! I like this much better than my old swiss... If you need more cargo space than that mentioned above, I recommend going with the ' Targus -sport'. My previous Swiss gear was just too thick and too many compartments for my need. Despite the seemingly high quality of the swiss, the shoulder strapp began to rip and had to 'Ghetto Sew" it back together. I said enough and bought this one. Pro: Light, sturdy, comfortable, compact, stylish, and cheap. Fits 15.6" laptop w/ sleeve perfectly, elevated laptop compartment so it wont hit the ground if books or binders are inside. The yellow targus logo is subtle adding accent to the design. Higher quality than other brands. Lets see how long this will last. (so far 3 month of use). Con: the laptop compartment lack some padding on the back surface (the side touching your back). So far, happy with the purchase and highly recommend. Thinking of buying one for my girl.

The PERFECT Backpack that will last YEARS
Anyone that wants a long-lasting backpack that can carry everything they could possibly need should get this Targus Voyager II backpack. Period. I will start by saying that I happened to by chance buy the Targus Voyager II 16" Backpack - Plaid TSB75501CA roughly NINE years ago when I was in undergrad. I did not know much about backpacks, but it was on sale and I had recently gotten my first laptop so I wanted something that could fit that and protect it well but also have enough room for my books, etc. And wow did that backpack deliver. I have had it since then and it has protected and carried my stuff over the last nine years across multiple countries, cities and work places. Finally, it was starting to wear so I decided I needed to get a replacement. In comes this Targus Voyager II 17" Backpack. I knew already that I wanted to get another Targus Voyager, and this backpack has continued the tradition/legacy of my old one in terms of having great protection, ability to hold A TON of stuff and comfort on my back/shoulders. This is actually larger than my previous but it's good that I actually bought an Alienware M17x laptop and that will fit into this backpack even with a case on it, and into the protective padded area of the backpack. In fact, there is another protective padding area in front of the main laptop one that can fit a tablet or a ~13-14" laptop. There is still enough room for books or paperwork. Additionally, there is a compartment in the front with insulated material to store food/lunch if you would like. And as my previous backpack, there is great water resistance with zipper covers and water proof ability with a full cover that is stored in a pouch at the bottom of the bag. The full black color allows this to be sleek enough for professionals or post-graduate students and I do not feel that it is bulky enough to be awkward. All in all, I am definitely happy with my purchase and I am confident that this will last me years like my old Voyager backpack did. I would recommend it to anyone and will buy again in the future, or whatever iteration they have at the time!

Targus Checkpoint-Friendly Air Traveler
I bought this backpack years ago (I think 2009) from Amazon and I am still using it on a regular basis, so I have to say that it has held up quite well. I travel a lot for business (at least 50%) of the time. It does open as a clam shell so you don't have to take your computer out; however, the rules are different in different airports and, more often than not, I have had to take the computer out, anyway. So, I would say that if you are buying it for this feature, don't. There is plenty of space for the computer but I would like to have a little more padding in the bottom. What I do is I roll up an extra shirt, socks, underwear, or something and put it in the bottom of that compartment and put the computer above. I used a 15" computer for years and recently changed to a 13". The main compartment has enough space for my work documents or 2 bottles of wine on my return trip from another country. The very small compartment in front is ok for some pens, business card holder, a phone, etc., maybe a wallet. There are 2 beverage holders (one on either side) but the bottles fall out all the time. It is a small bag. This is what I wanted because the ad says it fits under the airplane seat in front of you. Well, they have changed the airplane seats. the new, lighter seats sit lower to the ground. You might be able to squeeze it in, if there is no entertainment box there (which I have been unlucky enough to have, a lot), but there won't be any room for your feet. Most of the time, I put this in the overhead bin and check a suitcase with clothes. My business trips tend to be two weeks. One problem I found the hard way; I had to evacuate a building in a heavy downpour and I found that the bag wasn't waterproof. Luckily, I had grabbed the bag, but the laptop wasn't in it at the time. My wallet was - and it was soaked through to the money. I will have to try to find a way to coat the bag with water-proofing. I do still use the bag but I was searching today for a waterproof bag that might have more compartments and still work in an overhead bin without bogging me down too much. This is a nice, small bag. Oh, and the back has a section that slips easily over my roller bag handle and it stays in place nicely. This bag has been all over the world with me and has seen a lot of miles. I can't say there is any wear. I will probably use it for as long as possible.

Fantastic for the tech-dependent traveler!
Even though I travel solely for pleasure these days I still go nowhere without my trusty laptop. Of course, this meant while going through airport security having to haul it out of my old backpack, make sure it was in a bin by itself, wrestle it back in, etc. Finally I said to myself "Self, you need one of those backpacks with the separate compartment for the laptop. Let's go shopping." And I found this. My previous laptop backpacks have also been Targus and I've always been pleased with the quality and storage provided, so I hoped this would be no different. To my delight, it was not. Although it's set up more as a business carry-on rather than for someone like me who uses it on vacation or getaway weekends, for my purposes it suits me fine. The laptop compartment is the back pocket--note that it only zips partway down. My 15.8 fit perfectly with the velcro straps securing it further. Unlike my previous backpacks this only had one large compartment rather than two but it expanded quite a bit so I can get in enough clothes for a weekend trip. There's a very small pocket on the front of the bag that can fit a cell phone or an MP3 player, then a larger pocket below it which is outfitted like a wallet but which I use for personal stuff like toothbrushes and cosmetics. The two pockets on the side can be used for odds and ends (for me being stuff like my iPod charger cords and a place to stow my watch while going through security). The place where you unzip to separate the compartments is clearly marked by red letters on the zipper tabs. I first used this on our vacation to New York, flying out of Richmond airport. I followed a previous reviewer's recommendation and had my and my husband's liquids bag zipped up between the compartments as well as the bag that stores my noise-cancelling headphones and iPod), which made it super-easy to toss into bins. The compartments lay flat ... and it zipped through the x-ray no problem. It did the same at Newark and Philadelphia airports. In fact I had a few people ask me where I got it! This is a great deal for the price and a boon for those who can't travel without being connected!

Awesome backpack. Over the "personal item" measurements, but no problems so far
When I travel, I only want to take one backpack. This one has room for a change of clothes, etc., as well as electronics. (I take a 15" laptop, but it also has a sleeve for a tablet if you take both.) My daughter pointed out that it's over the dimensions quoted for a "personal item," although clearly smaller than carryon dimensions. Still I have had no problems carrying it on along with a rolling carryon suitcase. I use a smaller carryon (European dimensions) because I don't like gate checking a bag on regional flights. So far that has worked great, even on the smaller planes. While it is beefy, and has very large buckles for the top closure, it also has a good hip belt, and that is essential in my opinion. There are handles both in the center of the front and at the top. The beefy buckles and fully encased closure make this good for situations where you might be concerned about someone accessing your backpack from behind you. Yes, I use all the pockets. The insulated food pocket is good for taking snacks on the plane. I use two carabiners (undersized, not rated for climbing) to attach the backpack to the rollerboard (carry-on) handle. This gives a very weight-balanced, easy-rolling load for traversing airports, etc. as well as the ability to slip the backpack on when stairs are involved. I haven't used the included raincover, but I do like the ability to use the sidepockets for either waterbottles or readily accessed zipper-enclosed storage. I travel with this and a european sized rollerboard for week or less travel. Each will fit under the seat, though not together. In Europe I am sure they would make me check one. I would probably choose the rollerboard to check, because of the ease of access during travel.

Great backpack
Been using the laptop backpack for over a year now. A breeze going through US airports using the checkpoint friendly split design. Not accepted by Canada TSA yet so I had to take the laptop out of the bag. The bag is very durable - still looks as good as the day I bought it. Great features: 1. Fits easily under the airplane seat. 2. Lots and lots of pockets. Middle pocket that unzips to split the laptop section from the other half is closed at the bottom so can be used as a regular pocket when not traveling. HINT: When traveling it is a great place to store your 1 quart liquid bag so when you split the bag for screening you easily grab the bag to place in the bin. 3. Has slip through wide strap in the back that fits over the handle of the carry on. 4. Mesh pockets for water bottles on each side. 5. Good quality double zippers zip easily. 6. Padded straps for comfort. Update Dec 6, 2017 (Purchased June 22, 2010) Been using the bag for 7 years now and not a single thing wrong with the backpack. I use the backpack ever day for work and when I travel. Still looks very new, but I am not hard on my bags in general. Judging from recent reviews the quality may have gone down with newer manufacturing. I am still very happy with my purchase and the quality.

Nice Bag
This bag has done the job for me... I don't give it five stars because the stitching on it has come apart in two unrelated areas of the bag. There is a stretchy pocket on the inside of one of the big compartments, and the moment I put something in it, the fabric completely detached from the elastic cord it was sewn to. Not impressive... I'm handy though, so I sewed it back up since I could do that faster than it would take for me to send it back and wait for a new one to be shipped. After about a month of regular use, the stitching on one of the shoulder straps started coming apart. I don't believe it compromised the strength of the strap, but it definitely wasn't comforting sight. I sewed that up too and now it works fine again. Once again, I think its a nice bag, its just seems like it may have been put together a little hastily. Probably worth the $40 I paid for it.

Pretty great back pack
I got this back pack because I just got a macbook air and I wanted to have a backpack with a specific compartment for laptops. It is very comfortable and has 3 storage areas. One for the laptop and 2 others that are decent sized, you could easily fit textbooks and notebooks in them. I don't know if you are supposed to keep things out of the middles area section or not since that is the section that completely unzips the backpack so you can fold it into 2 pieces for airport security, but I got this thing for school not the airport so I put whatever in that section I need. It seems to be of good quality. All in all it is a good backpack for the price. It is definitely not as big as i thought, which is cool cuz I didn't need a huge backpack. My one complaint is the lack of pen holder in the smaller section of the back pack. There are just open pouches in that section which kinda gets messy with everything just free floating around in there. It would have been nice if they would have included some more dividers or something. Hope this helps.

Awesome Backpack!
I bought this backpack to transport my 17" laptop, cables etc for work purposes. It's absolutely fantastic, and has more features than I realised when I bought it. It is also secure, which is important to me.
