We bought this for my 8yo son. It's a really neat set that was a good price for all the things that came with it. However the handle grip did slip off already so it will need re-glued. I do really like that the ax tool handle goes all the way down through the handle. The handle grip did come off but still usable

I purchased this set for a grandson that is interested in finding gold and other gems. He loved it, and it made him a great Christmas gift.

Pro's: This kit was 30 dollars, has risen a dollar to 31USD, it is a great value for the price with the right expectations preempting the purchase. The jewelers loupe, hammer, whistle, canvas bag and goggles were great, exceeding my expectations. Just one of these items could be worth upwards of 30USD individually (except for the whistle). Heck, even the gloves, even though they aren't extraordinary, are a great go to have in the bag. Just with those alone there is a lot of value to be appreciated, and I do.Con's: But if I had bought this as a gift for someone, I would only not be disappointed if it were for a child aspiring for a hobby of geology. The gold paint the chisels are coated with comes off easily in transit, and covers everything with a fine dusting of the stuff. I don't mind myself (I personally like the look of the gold powder dusting everything), but again, this is an easy item to gift, and should be presentable, but it is not. It looks upon opening it, as though someone accidentally dropped the kit in a tub of gilt powder. The entrenching tool is frankly not up to any more or less than light duty shoveling, scratching, hoeing and prying, so much so that there should be some kind of warning included with it to prevent a child or a distracted adult from using this as though it is an indestructible tool and getting injured. The chisels are more heavy duty, but the description sells them as high grade tools for serious usage and they are not that, they can handle softer rocks well, but I don't push them farther than that.I really like this set, it's a lot of bang for the buck, but there is no way it can receive full marks simply because of the shovel in particular.

Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and everything was covered in a reddish brown dust with little gold flecks scattered around. The rock hammer was covered in rust dust and the chisels were flaking gold paint everywhere. I wish I had gotten a picture, but I have lung issues and immediately closed the box back up and had my husband take it to his shop.I would not let my child wear gloves or goggles that had been covered in that mess. I ordered this kit to take on vacation, as we were visiting a mine where you could dig. We decided to skip that activity after this fiasco.My husband says he can use the tools and other items in his workshop.

I got this from my son who loved to use my hammer and my mallet from my work bench and smash rocks. As much as I love to see him, use my stuff. I definitely prefer him not to use it on rocks that can destroy them. This comes with everything that you possibly need. Hammer, shovel to dig, safety goggles to keep your eyes safe and chisel. If you name it it's got it. The bag that it comes with is durable and has a lot of slots for everything possible. Always everything not just to be thrown in there. If your son or child is like mine and loves to dig and break rocks, this is definitely what you need. I definitely recommend it as it's given him endless joy since day 1.

It was just thrown into a box when I got it it was thrown into a box that is how I reseaved it and the gold color from the chisel got everywhere and the gloves was stuck together and had to get them apart I don't know about the quality yet the bag should have a easyer was to open and close it tho

I got this set for my beginner rock hounding son. He loves it. It had all the basics he needed to get started. He will need other items as he progresses, but this got him started. The items are all high quality and thick and sturdy, even the bag and goggles.The shovel, chisels and hammer are all hard steel. I love that the set comes with quality safety goggles in a nice rigid case. The bag is heavy canvas and well sewn. The kit did come with a little, paper, gem booklet. It would have been better if it came with a little getting started guide instead.
