How do you connect the radio to a homebase aerial

The easiest way is to use a BNC male to SO239 adaptor.

How good is the range

It depends on the antenna used. If it is used hand-held with the small rubber duck on top, then you should be able to achieve a mile or so. If used with an external mobile or base antenna, then the range could be anything up to 20 - 30 miles as the output power is 4 watts, the same as a mobile CB radio.
