Q: Can you use an Xbox on it?

It has an HDMI input, I can use a fire stick on mine so I would say yes. You would need to use in a dark room

Q: If you attach an external speaker does it need to have a/v cables?

You will need to run a 3.5mm jack plug from the projector to the amp for external speakers

Q: Do I need a sound system?

Yes if you want to watch movies, I connected mine to pc speakers

Q: If a home cinema system is connected will the sound be disbaled and only play through the projector itself?

when audio is connected it should only sound through the added speakers but did not do this with this funavo projector as sent straight back due to all reviews were from people who had this as a freebie it was so bad better quality from a 70s betermax tape
