Polyurethane Foam Sheet: The Science Project Material that makes you rethink Interior Design
The polyurethane foam sheet arrives looking like it was accidentally mailed as a napkin, then proceeds to expand like it’s late for a science fair. You open the package, set it down, and suddenly you’re questioning whether you accidentally ordered “foam, expanding, theatrical.” It rises more than yeast bread left out for 24 hours and does it with the confidence of something that knows you weren’t ready. Five minutes later, you’re holding the full 1.5 inches and quietly wondering if you should’ve ordered two… or if you should line your kid’s bedroom walls with it and finally achieve household peace. For science projects—especially the “dad, we’re building a wind tunnel” kind—this foam is an unsung hero. It’s soft enough to forgive enthusiastic measuring, dense enough to hold fans and ducting steady, and compliant enough to kill vibration before it turns your dining table into a percussion instrument. Fans seat cleanly, airflow stays controlled, and the whole assembly stops trying to migrate across the table. It’s the difference between “experimental apparatus” and “science project that doesn’t embarrass anyone.” In actual use, the foam behaves like it’s been raised by engineers and parents simultaneously. It cuts easily, tolerates repeated adjustments, and absorbs noise and vibration like it’s personally offended by chaos. Every time you trim it, it forgives you. Every time the project changes direction (which it will), the foam just shrugs and adapts. And yes—at some point, you will pause, look at the leftover pieces, and seriously consider whether lining the kid’s walls might improve acoustics, concentration, and general household harmony. It’s not structural, it’s not fancy, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. But for stabilizing, mounting, damping, and saving last-minute builds, this foam sheet is dad-tier problem solving at its finest. Quiet, effective, and way more useful than expected. Pros • Expands dramatically to full thickness (consistently entertaining) • Excellent vibration and noise damping • Easy to cut, shape, and revise repeatedly • Lightweight yet supportive for mounting components • Perfect for science projects, labs, and sanity preservation Cons • Arrives impossibly thin and mildly alarming • Compresses under heavier loads • Not structural—supportive, not load-bearing • May inspire questionable home-improvement ideas

Great for guitar case padding!
The original (aftermarket) case body inset was 3" thick rigid Styrofoam - 1.5" at the bottom with 1.5" edges. I replaced that with one layer of this foam on the bottom: two pieces trimmed to fill the full space and placed end-to-end. Second layer used two pieces as well, cut to the shape of my bass (horizontal seams offset from those on the bottom). Used spray adhesive to attach the layers, then covered in nice, soft, fuzzy fleece from the local fabric store. Turned out wonderfully! Foam is firm enough to support my guitar while still squishy enough to absorb any impact. As other reviewers have noted, the foam arrives vacuum-packed: all four pieces stacked total thickness was just over 1". But don't worry - just carefully cut open the plastic wrapping and let them sit overnight and they expand to their full 1.5" thickness (each). It did seem easier to make some of the straight cuts right after opening before the foam had a chance to expand to its full height.

Good for projects
It was big, im not sure if it was supposed to be easy to cut into but I needed it for a project and it was definitely hard to cut into. But again it is foam and worked good for my project

2 Pcs Polyurethane Foam Sheet
what I would call a medium density foam. I use it for padding under upholstery - custom oak consoles for 2nd row captains chairs in SUV's

Thickness not uniform
The sheets are vacuum packed, which is a good thing. One edge of two of the six sheets was not cut to the same thickness described in the advertisement.

Really Superior Foam
I have a sturdy case I bought which came with "pick" foam, i.e., foam that was cut every half inch or so but only partially so the pieces could be "picked" out leaving a space for whatever. The problem is the stuff just keeps falling apart, and after a short usage it is not very useful at all. I found this product and gave it a try. The best thing about this foam is that it is much less "spongy" than other foams. When you cut it (I used a scalpel, but an Xacto knife or similar will do), the foam that is left has much more body and therefore is much better at protecting the object you want protected, like my very expensive camera and lenses. The foam is shipped in a thick plastic bag and all the air has been removed. So what you get is much smaller than you expected. Carefully cut it out of the bag, and the foam expands to its full body very quickly. And, this foam is a lot less expensive and available in more convenient sizes than I have seen before. I give this product two thumbs up.
