what kind of hammer/mallet would you use with this? new to tools and rock hunting. thx

I use it with my rock hammer or 4lb sledge. I also use it without a hammer as a scraper or a pry bar. This is an awesome tool for extracting agate seams from the host rock

Is this tool good for digging up garden rock to sink a 4x4?

This tool is an excellent high quality tool. I use it for gold prospecting...prying, breaking rock, etc. This along with a post-hole digger should do the trick for you.

Should the chisel end of estwing - gp18 gad pry bar - 18" be sharp? what i bought is at least 1.5 mm wide (dull).

I just checked mine: it is NOT sharp, but the flat is slightly less than 1 mm across. The taper starts there and goes into the meaty part of the bar. Guessing for most purposes you don't want it sharp because it would just dull up quickly with serious use. If I needed it sharp I would just hit it with a grinder and MAKE it sharp. I use mine on rocks, so do NOT want it sharp. Hope that helps.

I'm looking for a tool to help pry out expansion joint wood out of my driveway and something just narrower than 3/4". How wide is the tip of this?

The gad is pointed at the tip only and would be limited. I would use an Estwing pry bar which is flat and slide it along the crevice. A large flat headscrewdriver would also help.
