Great finish
This is a fantastic product. Very easy application - no streaking or running and it looks great on red oak. Very durable so far but I am getting some of the Gilboy's beeswax for extra protection from water.

Buy it
A very good finish and protectant, easy to apply and brings out the natural qualities of your wood. A little goes a long way! I have used another brand for years, but this is much better than that.

This is easy to apply.
This is one of the best things I have ever applied to my wood floors. I cant believe how easy this was! Look at my floors! I know the pictures are of other things but also the floors are there. I did this in one weekend and theyre perfect and shiny and the wood grain looks good and they seem durable. I mean I just did them so I dont know yet. Ill be buying this a few more times. I have other rooms to do.

It's a 5 star for me.
We have an Ikea Karlby Walnut island top 74" x 42" which after 6 years was getting a bit roughed up as I like to cook and we use it a lot. No deep scratches on it or damage but well used with a cooks patina. i put a coat of Gilboys Hard Wax Oil on it using a microfiber cloth - took maybe 20 minutes. It dried overnight and next morning I put a coat on an area which was a little more worn. Before I went to bed I put another coat on the whole top. Next morning it looked great - surpassed my expectations. Then, just for fun and totally unnecessary , I lightly sanded the top with 320 grit sandpaper and applied another coat. Now it looks even better. It's a 5 star for me - would it be a 5 star for some one finishing antique furniture I can't say - but for a laminated wood countertop I'm really happy. Easy to apply, no smell and dries overnight.

Great for turnings
I'm happy to report that this hard wax oil is superb for applying to turned bowls, and is a new favorite. I have also been using Tried and True Original and really like it too. Here are some similarities and differences: Gilboys' is much thinner and, I find, easier to apply in small amounts. T&T being thicker results in a bit more wasted product, both by applying too much then having to remove excess. I find that Gilboys' really soaks in and has very little excess to remove. Gilboys' is a bit more forgiving, e.g. you must remove T&T excess within an hour or so or you'll start to get polymerization above the surface. Both have great finish results. Both warm up the color a bit, but I think T&T leaves a bit more amber color ... that can be a pro or con depending on the wood and your preferences. I've been dispensing Gilboys' in a small spray bottle, it seems thin enough to do this, but might eventually clog the spray head... You couldn't do this with T&T due to it's thickness. The smell of Gilboys' is not bad, but T&T has a genuinely pleasant odor. I like that both are all natural, low or non VOC. In any event, I highly recommend.

Great Quality… a little goes a long way
I usually use water-based polyurethane to refinish furniture, but I wanted to give this a try. Gil boys hard wax oil exceeded my expectations! Easy to apply and the finish was stunning. I wish it cost less, but I highly recommend it!

Easy to use with excellent results!
I used this hard wax oil to finish a solid cherrywood open pantry I'd built for our kitchen ... couldn't be happier with the results. The fumes were significantly less pungent than other oil finishes and, strangely enough, pleasant. Very simple process, I rolled my applications on with a foam roller, let sit for 20-30 minutes and used a cotton cloth to wipe off the excess ... lightly sanded with 320 grit between coats. I went with the recommended two coats minimum that resulted in a luxurious/buttery smooth finish. I can't comment on durability, but watched some videos that demonstrated a hard oil finish is much easier to spot repair than Poly. I'd used most of the can up, so I right away bought another! I will definitely use Gilboy's again, despite it being a little pricey, there's nothing worse than working hard a project only to have problems with the finish.

Nice product that works nicely depending on your piece.
This is a really nice product - depending on what you want to use it on. It does darken and change the color of your wood (darkens some woods more than others) as all oil based products tend to do but if your piece has different types of wood this can become a problem as it did with my piece. My piece was a mid-century lane cedar chest. It significantly darked the top of my piece way more then the body of my piece so I ended up having to buy oil based dyes to add to try and get the body of my piece to match the top a little better because I did not want to sand or strip this off risking damage to my wood veneer. A water based varnish would have been a better option for my project so using this product really depends on what you're working with. I know it's common to see people put on their product that you can use it on just about anything but really you shouldn't just because you can. If you have a piece you want to be darker and is all the same wood type then you'll be happy with this product. It goes on easily and wipes off easily and anyone can get a smooth beautiful finish with this so it's pretty user friendly but a bit messy. It lost a star for a few reasons. It's expensive and messy compared to using a polyurethane or a varnish for example. It also seems to need an additional finish like a waxing so even more work, mess and expense involved. If you're looking for that old school kind of finishing with extra steps and extra work then this is for you. Don't know if I'll use this again but I'm glad I gave it a try. My cedar chest looks nice after putting in a ton of extra work but I could have saved myself a ton of time and money with a gel stain and poly finish and probably have been just as happy with the finish. Another product under my belt and another lesson on refinishing.

Would have rated it 5 stars when I bought 6 months ago - just went to reorder and price has been jacked up by 50%. It’s now on par with fiddes for price and not as good. Shame. Was a great value product 6 months ago.

The BEST hard wax oil, full stop. Great stuff. Tough as old boots, lovely deep satin finish and brings out the grain very nicely. Ive used this for a few years now - it's worth every penny. Gilboys other items are also great - leather balm in particular.
