Another Bizarre and wonderful DCC setting
This is my third Dungeon Crawl Classics setting, and it continues to deliver. The tone hits that perfect balance—equal parts gritty and absurd—with artwork that feels straight out of Mad Magazine or Cracked. It’s a system you can take seriously if you want, or embrace the chaos as Crom intended. The setting itself stands out. The included full-color map does a great job conveying a dying world, offering a stark contrast to something like Lankhmar’s more lived-in, pulpy environment. Inside the box, you get a strong lineup: the core sourcebook, a dedicated spell sourcebook, and a creature folio. True to Goodman Games’ player-friendly approach, there’s also a download link for all the material—so you’re not paying twice (looking at you, Wizards of the Coast). I’ll admit, the setting drew from material I wasn’t familiar with—specifically the “Dying Earth” works of Jack Vance—but that’s part of the appeal. It’s already pushed me to dig deeper into its literary roots. What I appreciate most about systems like this is their accessibility. They avoid unnecessary complexity and over-specialization, making them easy for new players to jump into while still giving veterans plenty to work with. Now, Who This Setting Is NOT For: This setting won’t appeal to everyone, and that’s part of its identity. If you prefer tightly balanced mechanics, highly structured character builds, or a more predictable power curve, Dungeon Crawl Classics may feel a bit too loose. The system leans heavily into randomness, swingy outcomes, and chaotic magic—sometimes to the point where control takes a back seat to pure unpredictability. Players who enjoy deep optimization or carefully planned progression may find the lack of mechanical precision frustrating. Likewise, those looking for a grounded, serious tone might struggle with the setting’s intentionally bizarre and often irreverent style. The humor, strange spell effects, and over-the-top elements are baked in—you can’t really strip them out without losing part of what makes the system unique. It’s also worth noting that the pulp-inspired, “dying world” aesthetic—drawn from the works of Jack Vance—can feel unfamiliar or even alien if you’re more accustomed to traditional high fantasy like Forgotten Realms. This isn’t a world of clear heroes and villains; it’s strange, fading, and often morally gray. In short, if you want control, balance, and consistency, this probably isn’t your system. But if you’re willing to embrace chaos, it offers something genuinely different.

Buy it Just to Have It
Goodman Games - Good at getting us to give up our money but for good reason. It's everything you are hoping it is and highly likely to satiate your appetite for TTRPGing, even if you don't have anyone to play with. Just reading it and admiring the stellar artwork is worth your time.

If you like Vance and RPG, you'll love this set.
My favorite boxed set in DCC, just above Lankhmar. Very creative. If only they wrote more DCC Dying Earth modules. Everything is in the box to get started on DCC Dying Earth campaign other than DCC Dying Earth #0 module. Excellent!
