Q: What is the R- value?

The R value varies per application. The more air space there is results in higher efficiency, so, if used in a typical installation such as stapled to rafters or across joists where there is at least several inches of air space it will have a much higher r-value than if it's mounted directly to a surface, for example, as a wrap for ductwork. The product description states: "Has R 16.8 value for crawl space applications and R 6.13 value for basement walls." Those are much higher r-values than I've seen before through testing (more than double), though may represent the max value that can be achieved if installed with a very large air space for those type of applications.

Feral cats are wild, and cannot be socialized. You are doing a great thing by supplying an insulated box for the feral cat in your area. We built a box using this insulation. We bought an 18 gallon plastic tote for under $7 and the next smaller size for $4.50 from that big box store. We wrapped this bubble insulation around the smaller tote, put it inside the larger tote, added a polyester fleece blanket in the bottom ($2.88), covered the top with more bubble insulation, then put the plastic lids on. We cut a 6" diameter hole in the side of the two totes for the cat to use as an entrance (and put duct tape around the hole to hold the two boxes and insulation together, and we duct taped a flap over the entrance. Make sure it's up off the ground so snow and rain doesn't leak inside. Closed cell foam would work better for insulation, but it's very expensive.Note: The polyester fleece blanket is perfect because it won't absorb water and stays warm even when wet.

the staples shouldn't bother it at all as long as it didn't rip or tear
