A collection of the very best poems for children, edited by Roger McGough A wonderful collection of contemporary and classic poems chosen by children from schools around the UK. Roger McGough made the final selection and wrote the introduction. Roger McGough was born in Liverpool and educated at the University of Hull. He came to prominence in the 1960s with the publication of THE MERSEY SOUND, and is one of today's most popular poets. He writes for children and adults and performs his poetry all over the world. He was honoured with an OBE in 1997, and won the Signal Poetry Award in 1998. Roger now lives in London. Sheila Moxley is gaining a powerful reputation for her multi-cultural illustration. She lives in London. Review: More modern than traditional - Firstly, this is a beautiful book, it is great quality for a start and the pages are delightful and nicely illustrated. The poems ARE fun, and some are more 'kooky' than others in the way they are presented, or written, or just the content. I bought this book for my mum who's memory is not what it was. I had hoped it would have more traditional poems, the ones she would have remembered from childhood although that is not the case with this publication. If you are looking for children's poems for older adults, those they would remember, then this is not the book for you. It is however, lovely. Review: Excellent poetry book - highly recommended - This book would appeal to all ages up to about 11 years. Younger listeners would enjoy the illustrations and being read to, and older readers can use their interpretative skills. A very good Christmas gift. I have bought than one copy of this book over the years as gifts and prizes.

Dates would have been the icing on the cake...
This is yet another children's poetry book that doesn't have any dates in. When were these poems written? So infuriating. I think dates of the poet and when the poem was written would have been icing. It's important to set the poem in its historical context. Admittedly, some of the poems are timeless but in order to enhance the reader's experience of the poet, dates would have been ideal. I've continually had to use the internet or other modes of reference for the poet dates, which makes studying unnecessarily tedious. My other niggle is the page numbering, which for the most part is set on heavily coloured, swirly backgrounds. Absolute pain to read when trying to study it together with the OU coursework. I'm quite surprised that some of the poems were chosen by children, or was it that children were given a batch of poems to peruse and make a selection from?. Mr McGough, the editor, states that the selection was made from children from 135 schools; I wonder if that's primary or secondary, or even private? He does also mention that the poems fit into three categories: contemporary; more than 25 years old, and more than 100 years old. Um.. shame it's not apparent in the book; I wonder, which is which? The illustrations are lovely

Best of the Bunch - by far
I ordered the other 'first' poems for children on this listing to read to my granddaughter. They are so inferior - all bland and modern, cheap copyright. This is the real thing -- grand old classics like the Pied Piper of Hamelin (an extract), Matilda, Tiger! Tiger!, Dover Beach, The Owl and the Pussycat, along with modern stuff. Funny and stirring, beautifully laid out, with each poem starting at the top of its own page. Chosen by schools and children apparently, with Roger McGough doing the editing. Well, he's done a great job!

Some fun poems
I brought this as it was a set book for my course. Some of the poems are quite fun. If my children were young I would probably read the poems to them.
