Frees up USB-C without dock
This adapter allows me to charge my Surface laptop (with usb-c cable) which allows me to use the usb-c port for an external monitor (without a dock). Works well and have not had any issues.

Save your money, don't gamble with this adapter.
It's a very reasonable price, but save your money. You might get one that works, but maybe not. If it works, it might not last long. I ordered one, it didn't work at all, no light, no charge, nothing. I got a replacement, thinking perhaps I just got an accidental dud and was willing to give the product another try. Replacement arrived quickly, and it worked...once. After a whole hour of use, it went dead and never worked again. No light or any indication of electricity flowing in the unit whatsoever. I tried 6 or 7 different usb-C cables just to make sure. I'm so disappointed because I *really* wanted this to work, as I hate the form factor of the OEM's charger for the Surface, it's a P.i.T.A.!

Did the trick and cheaper than a dedicated adapter. All legacy adapters should work this way. So good.

Charges Surface Book 2 2019 at 38W total, 22W net to battery - slower than OEM charger, but still ok
Review and test on a Surface Book 2 from 2019 The adapter does actually charge using a USB C PD cable. See photo. That's already better than adapters I've bought in the past. The magnetic connection is fairly strong. Works about as well as the OEM charger magnet. I have only had it for a few days, so can't speak to the longevity, but it's cheap, so I could just buy another one if it breaks. For my test The Charger: I'm using a high-quality Anker charger that displays the total power output from the USB-C port. The Cable: I'm using a USB-C PD cable that has 240W printed on it, but it's new and I've only confirmed it so far do deliver up to 60W to a Samsung 16" laptop and 65W to a USB-C soldering pencil. Comparison: Stock OEM Microsoft charger, which is advertised at 105W, but only 95W is available on the laptop charge cable - as there is a second USB A port. (The rating on the back of the OEM charger is 15V @ 6.33A, or 94.95W) Unable to Compare to USBC-PD charging using the Computer keyboard's USB-C port. My kids broke it. Test Protocol and results: I used up the battery to about 15% so it would charge near the full rate possible for the battery. The Anker Charger says that 38W is being delivered to the PC through the adapter I'm reviewing here. Using the windows app Pure Battery Analytics, the battery is charging with a net of about 22W. Presumably the missing 16W is power drain from running windows on the laptop. Compared to the stock Microsoft Charger: I don't have a Kill-a-watt to directly measure the total charger power output for comparison with the 38W number from my Anker charger above. After charging the battery only to about 19%, I then switched to the Stock OEM charger that came with the Surface Book 2. The battery should not be limiting the charge rate differently between the two tests. Pure Battery Analytics records 35W of net battery charge. That compares to 22W with the adapter I'm reviewing. Assuming the same 16W system overhead usage, that means the actual stock charger output would be about 51W. (again rated at 95-105W - see notes above). That compares to the 38W I'm measuring going down the USB-C cable with the adapter. So it seems to be reducing the total power throughput. Summary There is a power throughput penalty using this adapter, for sure (51W with OEM down to 38W with this adapter). If you have a new battery, I don't know if this adapter will still be limited to 38W, but I bet it will not go as high as the OEM charger, no matter what. For me, 22W net battery charge should take me from 0 to 80% in about 90 min, which is fine for my kids, who are going to be the ones inheriting this laptop, as they will never be far from a charger - the battery is to crap to use it any other way. You're probably in a similar boat unless you've replaced your battery. Again, at least it works. I've bought adapters like this in the past that do absolutely nothing with the Surface Book 2. There must be something about the Book 2 it that is slightly different from the Book 1 or other surface devices that makes these kinds of adapters not always work - so I'm just glad to find one that does. I'll be taking this adapter travelling with the family along with a large GaN 800W charger that charges all my devices simultaneously. Should save a lot of space in luggage, and should be less likely to be inspected by hand at TSA checkpoints. Additional Notes on my system: I never did such a test when the computer was new in 2019, but my battery is kind of trashed now. My measured battery capacity in Pure Battery Analytics is only 46570, but the design capacity is 7530, so I've lost roughly 40% battery capacity, and presumably have a reduced max charge rate due to battery wear. I used this PC many hours per day as my main work computer for about 5 years, and almost always kept it plugged in, charging to 100% - not good for a battery. The wood veneer cover for my laptop is laser cut actual rosewood with adhesive backing from a company called Toast. You can google it if you like it.

Paired with Anker 737 power bank and Anker 240W USB C cable to power Surface Book 3 all day.

works, but does not fast charge
doesn't fast charge (i have a 120W anker cable that fast-charges when plugged in to my surface's USB-C port) and because the actual housing unit is bulky/heavy, the magnets are easily pulled out.
