Nokia 8 SIM-Free Smartphone - Steel

Everything is great about the phone except some minor problems that at least in my experience are nagging at first. Bluetooth is slow to start and might freeze and restart the phone a couple of times. It gets resolved by itself afterwards. Some people might experience microphone problems every now an then, especially if the cell signal is below average for either party taking part in the conversation. The back is easy to scratch or damage. A case and a screen protector is strongly recommended. Ghostshield works better for me. The one provided by DN Alive came off in 1.5 months of daily use on two phones that I have purchased previously. Otherwise it runs on pure android 8.1.0 Oreo with an upgrade to Android P when the final and stable RTM or GM (Gold Master) is released to the public. Superb sound and video quality. Some review websites point out that the photos taken with nokia 8 are not of the greatest quality but I haven't noticed any issues when it comes to picture quality. Maybe some people have higher expectations from a smartphone camera than I do. I bought two phones sometime at the end of 2017 and in february 2018 and they stll run as smooth and fast as they were when I took them out of the box. I ordered a third phone because I believe that it is worth every penny, especially if you can get it at a discounted price. I ordered a nokia 8 for 323 pounds. I am a heavy daily user, carrying a powerbank just to make sure that I never run out of juice.

Been using this phone for around a week now and am hugely impressed, especially for the price paid which was and still is currently for the tempered blue £219.99! Build quality is fantastic, real solid feel but not too heavy or thick and fits really nicely into the hand. As mentioned elsewhere no bloatware and with that it's really snappy for pretty much everything. With this colour at least I also like the fact it doesn't attract fingerprints which is one of my pet hates. Camera is decent but won't blow expectations. Good light conditions give some really nice results but anything outside of that is just average, I'm fine with this but I won't be getting rid of my trusty old Nokia 808 Pureview just yet for holidays and special days out. I did read that Nokia might be bringing Pureview back so I'm very hopeful for the future. Support seems great, out of the box it updated to the latest Android and did a whole ton of updates. If I have only one dislike it's the loud speaker which is really terrible and I would say the worst I have come across out of any of my phones to date. It isn't the volume as it can go pretty loud, but it's so tinny sounding that it's a bit horrible watching youtube videos which I tend to do a fair bit of without using headphones. I can live with it though and it really says something that aside from that the decide feels every bit premium for such a low price. My wife has a Galaxy S9 and honestly it doesn't feel a world apart. I don't think you'll find a better phone in this price range, go for it!

Purchased this directly from Amazion in the middle of October. It was on the August security patch out of the box and since then has been updated twice to the October patch. No other android phone I have owned has received updates this quickly. The Android Oreo (8.0) update is rumoured to be imminent too. If Nokia (HMD Global) keep this up they are going to win a lot of fans - most OEM's are not even close to rolling out Oreo updates yet. What about the hardware itself? The phone has an all aluminium frame on the back and sides with Gorilla glass 5 on the front which curves gently into the frame. The shape of the back tapers towards the edges making the device feel even thinner than it actually is (and it is thin). The twin 13MP back cameras sit in an elongated glass plate (along with a flash and Zeiss branding) that only slightly protrudes from the rear. Build quality is fantastic - the phone feels premium and solid with a pleasant heft (160g). You could argue that the design is slightly behind the curve with todays near totally bezeless marvels but i will settle for solid build and no accidental screen presses. Inside, the Nokia 8 is packing this years android top end chipset of choice, the Octo-core Snapdragon 835 with Adreno 540 and 4GB of RAM. This means performance is awesome aided by what is essentially stock android this phone can handle anything you can throw at it without stutter. There is a generous 64GB of storage with an SD card slot should you need more. The dual rear and single front camera (also 13MP) produce good to excellent results - not quite as good as the very best but not far off at all. 99% of all users will be more than happy with the results. Call quality and audio is great, the single bottom firing produces clear tones (if lacking in bass somewhat). Connectivity is great with the antenna array on this latching onto and keeping signal in areas when some of my other handsets have struggled. The 5.3" 1440x2560 lcd screen (554ppi density) cranks up to more than 700 nits peak brightness which is well above average and means you should be able to see the screen on the sunniest day. Colours are well balanced and natural. Despite the screen size and high density couple with the powerful chip the Nokia 8 manages some very respectable battery times. In balanced use i am getting 2 days out of a charge (i hit the plug at 15%) with over 6 hours total screen on time. Summing up, this is a great phone for the money - remember it is £100-150 cheaper than equivalent flagships. I would not hesitate to recommend this. Excellent work Nokia and welcome back!

This review is for the NOKIA 8 High quality. Great value. Build & Aesthetic: The phone feels premium. High quality materials and no bending creaking, or loose buttons. Generally looks stylish and modern - however the large top and modern bezels makes the phone look slightly dated against Galaxy S8, Pixel 2 and LG G6 (but has not bearing on the functionality of the phone). However, as with any valuable phone.. put a case on it. I know it adds weight and spoils the aesthetic, but it's better than having a broken screen. Camera: Too early to tell - I have taken a couple of test shots, which came out pretty nicely. Will edit review further when I have more to go on. Anecdotally, from many tech site reviews, I hear the camera is good to excellent. Perhaps a little short of the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2 when taking low light shots, but more than good enough. Software: Pretty much stripped down to stock android and no bloatware (apart from an o2 priority app that was easily uninstalled). Very happy with it - and nothing I am looking to change so far. everything is fast and fluid. Setup was nice and easy, as it was able to back up from Google cloud to automatically reinstall all the apps I have on my previous phone and even use the same wallpaper... was very quick and very easy. Hardware: 64GB storage (plus slot for memory card), 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 835 chipset. Does everything you need and does it quickly and well. There are some phones offering more RAM, but it is overkill.... the Nokia 8 should be more than adequate. Battery life: (Edited 30 Dec) So, after a few weeks of use now, I usually have about 50% battery left at the end of day... meaning I could probably squeak 2 full days between charges if I had to. I'm a fairly heavy user, so this is massively impressive. Value: I picked this up from amazon at £369... this is half the price of the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2 and a chunk cheaper than the latest OnePlus phone.. and you are getting a phone of pretty much the same quality and capability. This makes the phone an absolute bargain. It's really hard to make a case for spending more on any of the other flagship phones out there. You can spend less on other phones, but there will be a compromise somewhere, usually on chipset, storage, camera or all 3. Notes: There is no notification LED. However, when phone is charging, or when you pick it up, the screen shows the clock, plus message notifications, missed calls and emails. You can double-tap to wake the screen - but you can't double-tap to sleep (you push the power button)... an odd omission and something I miss. A quick double-tap on the power button starts the camera app.... a great function for if you are quickly trying to catch a moment with the camera.

Bought two of these phones and this is the second of the two reviews. You will see my experience with the two phones differ dramatically. For a phone that was released back in October 2017, this is highly spec'd with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. Although not necessarily comparing like-for-like this phone (at the price I paid) was a saving of approximately £500 versus the brand new iPhone XR (4GB/64GB). Based on this, this phone is superb value. One of the big pluses for me is that the Nokia 8 comes with stock Android which was quickly updated after powering on to Android Oreo. Keeping my fingers crossed that soon it will be upgraded to Android Pie. This phone replaces my old LG G4 which got amazingly hot, something that this Nokia 8 has not done - keeping cool throughout the day. Also the battery on the Nokia lasts pretty much the whole day, the LG G4 only a few short hours. The phone runs fast and smooth with apps and screens opening and switching seamlessly. Many new phone manufacturers have removed the 3.5mm jack for conventional headphones, but not Nokia and this was one of the reasons I bought this phone. Thankfully this phone has not suffered the same problem of a dreadful speaker as the other phone, though not convinced it is the best on the market. Again the charging plug supplied did not fit, not a big deal for me as I have plenty. The phone received is the TA1012. I've noticed the price of this phone is slowly increasing, possibly as it is proving so popular. Still very good value for money. Disappointed that I had to return my first Nokia 8 but I am very pleased with this one and the price I paid for it. No complaints. Edit: 24/01/2019. Now had the phone for a couple of months and just noticed that Nokia have upgraded the stock Android from version 8 (Oreo) to version 9 (Pie). Full marks to Nokia for this so this means although purchased with Version 7 (Nougat) I now have the most up to date Android version. Very happy, so far this phone still deserves the 5 star rating, in my opinion Also noticed that phone is about £60 more expensive now than when I bought it . . .

So after years of Windows loyalty due mainly to the super stable OS (don't really care about apps), and superb, durable hardware, Microsoft gave windows phone the chop. This left a void of quality, stylish phones which dare to be a little different from the usual suspects. Well, i can report with a positive tone, this is a great Nokia phone. Build quality is outstanding, (there is a video on YouTube regarding the design and build process) the hardware really is flawless. A whopping 64GB of ROM for ample storage and enough RAM to keep all your apps open without slowdown or crashing. This phone was a gamble to be honest, my Lumia 930 had become tired, cosmetically mostly, but was due for replacement anyway. Market choices are a symmetry of korean brands, a sterile over hyped chinese built designer brand, and a couple of odd ball brands out there of little heritage. AS my phone is used constantly throughout the day, durability and flexibility were paramount. Android runs as fluidly as you might ever want, no bloatware at all, i dare say pretty much a stock Android install, which is brilliantly deployed. The music player performance is decent (not on a par with my HiRes Sony Walkman though, and the cameras seem decent enough for a phone. Remember , this is not a professional grade camera. Time will tell if it can match up to my Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 of past, but to be honest, so what if it doesn't? I have a Nikon D800 for taking pictures right!

After my first week with the Nokia 8 I do like it but there is room for improvement. In my opinion the actual device has a very nice high quality feel in the hand, it feels nicely balanced, weighted and solid albeit rather slippy, I can only guess if the polished versions are even slippier, I have the matte steel coloured version. Much of the early marketing hype for the Nokia 8 plays on the fact it runs a very stock, standard version of Android and this will enable quicker updates to Android Oreo. The other side to that coin is that it makes for a very bland user experience. Such that the software experience doesn't match the hardware. The Nokia 8 is missing a wide variety of enhancements, tweaks and user options found on other devices that increase the overall perception of quality and usability. An example being that the gadget media has recently reported that the Nokia 8 has an unusally blue tinted screen (I find it only subtley noticable) but unlike some other Android phones, like my previous BlackBerry Priv, the Nokia 8 has no user option to adjust the display white balance. For some bizarre reason for a higher end phone the 8 does not have a dedicated notification LED. Considering much hype was also made of the twin snesor camera with Zeiss branded lenses, the camera performance is totally average. When an old BlackBerry has a better feature set than you, Nokia/HMD have got some work to do!

Thorough underated smartphone. I've been using this for a few weeks now as a replacement for my nexus 5x. It seems like a natural replacement for nexus devices, having pure android and mid-high end specs. I was reluctant to buy another Google or LG device due to widely reported reliability issues. The design is fantastic, looking quite utilitarian and slim, with an aluminium back. I prefer this to the gimmicky curved screen / glass back style favoured by many manufacturers, as it feels much more solid. The screen quality is superb and extremely bright. Battery life is a world away from my old nexus and it typically lasts around 2 days of heavy use. This is helped by an internal Nokia heatsink, which eliminates any overheating - something that was an issue with my old nexus. The camera received a bit of criticism in reviews. In low light it struggles a little, but is entirely usable for everyday snaps. The photos aren't oversaturated, which I like. Performance is indistinguishable from any top end device I've seen. The real selling point to me is the bloat free, pure looking android experience. Nokia are making a huge effort keeping their devices up to date and I'm not prepared to buy from manufacturers that can't do this. I've already received a number of security patches and am now running android 8 Oreo, one of the few devices that has received the update. Overall it's a great phone - the reviews on here are combined with lower end Nokia models, so don't let the average put you off!
