Lara Croft Back from the Dead
With this edition you get everything packed in the white survivor tin, on opening it you will see some cover art which is hiding the Lara croft figurine which is a very detailed figurine with props such as the bow and additional hands to change weapons. On removing the figurine you will see the survival edition box which looks awesome with the cover art it has on the front. Within the box you will find a survival pouch which could be used store whatever you see fit which also comes with a neck lead which can be attached or removed as required. A Map of the Island is provided though its a shame its in black and white and not in colour,it also gives brief descriptions of the island which you will get to know as you play the game. On the other side of the map you get a poster of Lara. You will also the find the art book in here which is a hardback which includes art work of scenes, places and people from the game. You will find the copy of the game here as well(includes the Hitman weapons pack for the game and the download code for the music) which is in the standard PS3 case with the standard art cover as the standard edition. The shanty town code will be sent by Amazon. I found the game to be thrilling and on your first play through you will really get emotionally attached with the story and Lara and everything that happens to her and around her. you could class this game as an action/adventure/thriller/horror as it is an intense experience. The game play is good there is a good balance between fighting enemy's, button bashing ad cinematic's which doesn't lose the flow of the story and game, though I did expect more puzzles than I found in the game. There are various weapons; Bow, Pick Axe, Shotgun, Rifle and Pistol which can be upgraded but you do have to find pieces and salvage in order to upgrade. People have complained that there are too many enemy's (you should play on easy then) and personally playing on Normal difficulty it was challenging when there was an area of large amount of enemy's but it would be no fun if it was totally easy. The graphics, sound and details are amazing during game play and cinematic's and I personally feel is faultless. People who have given the game of 1-2 stars I feel are people in their 40's who don't like change and fell in love with a trans-gender looking Lara in the 90's who basically went down hill after Tomb raider 2 and basically died. The new resurrected Lara is absolutely beautiful in body and mind and is a great reboot to start a potential successful Tomb Raider series. This game is alot of fun with a good story and plenty of game play, worth the purchase and you wont regret your decision.

What's not to love?
Well I love this game so much I just had to write a review and I don't normally do these but the reasons below are why I gave this product 5 stars. DELIVERY I used the 'next day delivery' option and heaven behold it was on my doorstep the next morning, very fast considering I ordered it the night before at around 6pm. As well as arriving quickly the packaging was very snug and secure, game was sealed and I was proud with how quick Amazon preformed their delivery service. Very proud to be a customer! GRAPHICS Ok having played all the Tomb Raider games, I can safely say I am a big fan. I remember and I'm sure all you do the days of the blocky body parts, points and edges in places they shouldn't be. But back then it revolutionized gaming, it defined it. Since then the definition has been edited. The evolution of our technology is evident in every new Tomb Raider game. This one however completely took me away. The graphics are beautiful. Brilliant on a full 1080p TV although I'm sure they'll look good on any screen. Lara is as realistic as can be, she's gorgeous. The animations are very stunning and overall the game just grabs you and pulls you inside the experience and adventure. I did feel as if I was there. STORY Ok, I have only played about 10 hours of this so far and haven't completed it, there's just so much to do! Which is good because again remember those old Tomb Raider days when the game was so linear? You get in a tomb, complete it and that was it. With this there are so many tasks for you to do. Including hunting, learning survival techniques, killing and oh we can't forget raiding! I don't want to ruin the story line too much but basically Lara is ship wrecked on an island with some friends and using her natural instincts must fight to survive. And Crystal Dynamics didn't filter out gore with this game, oh no! There's blood, there's pain and screaming. Something the other games in the series lacked and it took away a lot of feelings which in this game are present. I felt her pain when she fell off ledges (not physically obviously). I can promise you that you'll be gripped into this game. There's a lot of weapons too! Including a bow, pistols (clearly, it is Tomb Raider for crying out loud!), shot guns, rifles and more. All of which can be upgraded. OVERALL I think this game is amazing and for the price definitely a bargain! Seriously you're missing out if you haven't got it, so pay up and go and raid some tombs! You won't regret it. This game has had me glued to my screen for so long I suppose the only disadvantages I have from it are a headache and cramps. But with what Lara goes through I can't complain.

Not a tomb raider game but a great game nonetheless
I admit I am a loyal and dedicated fan. I own and have completed every game that has been released for the playstation. Over the years the games have frustrated and amazed me in roughly equal amounts. Unfortunately, some of them were so difficult I couldn't have finished without looking on the internet or asking other people for advice (try shooting the bell). Others I have finished myself (and this is one of them). I've been lost, confused and seen Lara suffer thousands of gruesome deaths (though none more gruesome than this game). However this is the first time Lara has not been sexy. She spends most of her time covered in mud or blood and looks more like a zombie than a hollywood actress. And I am not just talking about the ever reducing cup measurements, she isn't even pretty here. What a disappointment. As you would expect with a big budget game, a lot of the money is on the screen for you to look at and is not necessarily reflected in better gameplay. Having said that, Lara's movement is smooth and intuitive, although as in other games before it, you seem to accidentally light flares every now and then. I found myself missing some of the daft but brilliant things Lara used to do, like swimming, scuba-diving, backflips, handstands and swan dives. Then there are the signature pistols. Without them, taking on 20 heavily armed assailants when all you have is a bow and arrow and a few shotgun rounds can seem a bit unfair and a little daunting at times. As in earlier games, sometimes when you feel like you are finally getting tooled up, you get captured and end up with no weapons again. In the end, though, the gameplay is stressful but very addictive and I could not stop playing it. Although climbing and jumping somehow lacks the risk and heart-pounding excitement of the earlier games, overall I think this is the best control I have ever had over Lara. I think that all started to improve when Crystal Dynamics got involved and they have taken it even further in this game. The environments look the most detailed and photorealistic they have ever been, making the PS3 feel like a brand new console. Huge respect to the programmers, who seem to squeeze more and more out of an old console! Unfortunately the atmosphere is uniformly dark, cold, windy and wet. Gone are the beautiful locations of the earlier games, that made you feel like you were on holiday just by playing them, locations that you wanted to go off and explore. I loved the wrecked ships and downed planes, though. They looked amazing. Here, there isn't much time to relax and the game is more like a b-movie script with gameplay in between. The video sequences in between are not very well acted and make the people look like puppets in Thunderbirds. This is a bit of a disappointment too, when most other games use motion capture and either real actors or top-notch voice talent. Every time a new Tomb Raider game gets released, I hope that they will produce a truly open environment along the lines of Grand Theft Auto III, where you can go anywhere you want. If anything, these environments are more restricted than some of the earlier games and it feels more like level after level. The exploration has largely disappeared, as has the puzzle solving. The latter I didn't miss that much, as sometimes dragging boxes, pulling levers, flicking switches and putting cogs back into machines can get a bit old. I did miss how environments would change in earlier games, usually by a change in water level or some natural disaster. I just don't get the artefact collection here. Whereas before the artefacts pulled the story along, here they are meaningless. Surely Lara should be more like Dr Alice Roberts, intelligent and interested in these things. Here she is more like a special ops soldier. Am I supposed to believe that going through this experience, where most of her friends die and it would take you an hour to climb up the pile of dead bodies that Lara produces, motivates her to be an archaeologist? In the end I think the team were brave to try something new and they have produced a great game, which will appeal to people who have never played any of the Tomb Raider games. However, for those of us that have played them, although this is heading in the right direction, it falls a little short of a five star experience. I hope it is successful enough for them to keep going and create another one!

Immersive, dark, new and fun
First caveat. I haven't finished the entire game. To be fair I've only had it for 24 hours and I like to savor the experience rather than race through a game in a single day. Now that said, if you think you might like this but are unsure, I recommend you buy it! I was impressed from the start. After a little hiccup with Steam was sorted (I've changed my wireless card since I last logged in and the installation got stuck until I realised this and re-authorised the account) the game launches with a simple, intuitive and likeable interface. Graphics setting are easily selected without a benchmark or constant tweaks and starting the game doesn't put you though endless choices to make but sets you right into the action. There are a couple of short intros and then the graphics get to shine. I'm still not certain if half of the opening sequence was a pre rendered video and then it cut into a scripted sequence in the game engine, or if the entire sequence was the game engine. That should give you an idea of how pretty things are. This is probably as photo-realistic as I've ever seen a game get. I'm running a two year old mid spec gaming laptop. I set the graphics to 'high' with the option of 'ultra' and 'extreme' above this. By comparison I run Far Cry 3 on maxed out settings. I tested out the higher options but noticed little difference but a clear drop in FPS. The game starts with some basic puzzles with a dark, frightening feel then puts you in a exploration and survival setting. The interface tutorial is handled during these sequences in an unobtrusive way. There are a couple of QTE (mash this key sequence to not die) segments but as long as they don't pop up any more frequently I think these added to the gameplay rather than retracting from it. I don't played many FPS or adventure games but in the past I've picked up the Far Cry series and Operation Flashpoint games because I've enjoyed the realism and open world. Tomb Raider compares to Far Cry 3 quite well, in fact you could almost believe Far Cry 3 was a major inspiration for it (world design, QTE, survival mechanics, skills and experience etc...) but I realise that the development length and close release means this is not the case. TR has a darker feel to FC3 and so far the world is significantly better designed. FC3's world was excellent, but it was also large and necessarily a lot of it was bland. So far TR's world seems like it has been intricately designed so that it is filled with detail and variety. The environment is also highly immersive. Lara really seems like she is "in" the environment as she responds and interacts with it. If she gets muddy it doesn't gradually fade away but stays until you walk through a waterfall. Noises in the game cause her to look around and respond with anxious mutterings. This brings me to one of the things I like about this game the most. Lara herself is rebooted to the extent that although she is clearly athletic she has no experience or confidence. She is alone and frightened. Early on she is injured, and this affects the way she moves and acts. She has no equipment and doesn't know what to do. This is implemented so well I can actually believe it. Gone are the days of a blocky and oddly proportioned heroin standing legs wide and holding a canon in each hand, leaping and rolling about in an arcade style. Now we have a small, realistic, frightened young woman alone and in need of learning rapidly if she is going to survive. Her movement, appearance, dialogue and demeanour are true to this. I'm hoping this realism won't be lost as the game progresses and Lara gains in confidence. These are the first impressions that have most piqued my interest but I have barely scratched the surface. Hopefully like FC3, TR will prove to be a game that continues to surprise and expand in depth, rather than becoming the all over too quickly affair of the last to Operation Flashpoint games. But from what I've seen so far I'm optimistic. I've rated the game 5/5 overall. Should my opinion change I will come back and update this review. For fun I've rated it 4/5. I retracted one star because, although I like the dark and gritty style, I do feel the opening sequence was a little too dark. It was bordering a little on horror rather than just suspense. This has been done before in other games (Max Payne springs to mind, as do previous TR games) and I think its both old and not really needed. Puzzles can be just as interesting and compelling without dark red lighting, candles, bones or bodies hanging from ceilings. It just wasn't what I was looking for. As a result I wouldn't play this late at night if you have a tendency to dream vividly! Nor would I think this suitable for under 18s, but thats IMHO.

A great game and a fantastic product
Let me start off by saying I'm not a mad gamer or XBOX 360 fan, but I do enjoy playing the occasional game on the XBOX 360. This game is something great and it is very hard to put down. The story is quite interesting and the gameplay keeps you engaged for ages, so much so that it was always sad when I had to turn the console off and go to bed. I'd never really got into the original Tomb Raider games so I didn't know what to expect when playing this, but from the reviews I'd seen about it I was prepared to purchase on faith, which was duly rewarded. The game comprises 3rd person action with adventure, which works well. While you're not required to perform all the side missions, or go exploring everything to finish the game, doing the little puzzles and exploring the game world does reward you with weapon upgrades, character upgrades and further background information about what's happening on the island and what you've got to look forward to as you progress. You also benefit from not having to completely explore an area before you progress to maximise points. The game makes use of a nice quick transport feature that allows you to quickly jump between regions you've already visited to allow you to jump back to previous regions and complete them when you'd rather slow down a bit and take it easy. This saves you from having to wade through the regions by walking, which saves a lot of time. One of the great things about this game is the way Lara expands her capabilities and how the game world changes her character from an innocent young lady into a more hardened killer and survivor as you progress. This is evident in how she reacts to her early kills by feeling remorseful and a bit sad, to hardening up as more and more people attempt to wipe her out. This factor also plays into the gameplay by enabling you to explore further areas as she "learns" to adapt to the environment and acquires the skills to do these things. An example of that would be the ability to climb rocky walls as you progress further into the game. Areas which are inaccessible due to Lara's lack of ability early on become unlockable as Lara acquires the skills, requiring you to travel back to previously completed areas to fully explore and locate all treasures. Gameplay is great and as someone not entirely proficient with a controller, it isn't particularly hard to kill your enemies. If I could make one criticism it would be that it seems a bit light on puzzles. I quite enjoy the puzzles the game includes, but I believe it would be better if it included some more of them, and less of the "find things hidden in obscure locations" which are littered throughout the game world (Some of which are very difficult to find). Fortunately, the game provides a number of tools for helping you out when you're somewhat stuck, some of them helpfully subtle. Lara will often think aloud if you're a bit lost as to what you should do, and treasure maps can help you with finding many of the hidden treasures in a region once you've found them. The "Survivor mode" also helps highlight items and characters which can also help you progress. Players who choose to explore the world will be rewarded and the key is to jump around and go places you wouldn't normally go. The world is vast and these out of the way places are often locations for hidden treasures. Requiring multiplayer to completely unlock the game's achievements also seems a tad unfair (If you don't play much multiplayer, or have XBOX Live Gold that is). The game looks and sounds fantastic and makes great use of your surround sound system. If you have a big TV you'll be rewarded with the immersive environment that looks and sounds fantastic. It's a thoroughly enjoyable game that's worth the price. Whether the extras included in this special edition of the game are worth the extra money is up to you. The art book is nice, as is the packaging, but the main motivator for me in purchasing this edition over the bare-bones release was mainly the fact that it was considerably cheaper than the bare-bones edition available for sale, even with discounting, in Australia. tl;dr: Buy it. It's worth the bucks and you'll easily have lots of fun in what is an outstanding game.

Not Tomb Raider
Let's cut to the chase, for those 15 year-olds who want to play Gears of War or Call of Duty, but with a half-dressed woman who, let's be honest, sounds almost as frustrated with the game as me, then this mindless offering is probably just right for you. I enjoy stealth games, I enjoy puzzlers too. The aforementioned GOW does running about killing and being killed, with humour and blood galore. Tomb Raider has never been about that, and I was really hoping, after what seems like 20 years since the last outing, that the wait would be worth the investment and my patience. It's been neither. OK, some pretty graphics, but a naf story, with more cringworthy cutscenes than I could bear to count and characters who all looked either straight out of Desperate Housewives or a poorly edited Batman film. Heartless is about the best way to describe it. Before England's game-playing youth put pen to paper in defence of this rubbish, they're probably all missing the point. Like I said, if you want a beat-em-up or shoot-em-down, go get the wonderfully suitable latest Gears and you can whoop and shoot as much as you like. This franchise, up until now, hasn't been about much, if any, killing people, and bearing in mind that this is supposed to be a prequel to her later life, I can only think that she spent the intervening years in a convent, repenting for all the killing and squeaking she did in this tripe. She was certainly a pretty heartless lass when younger, and I can only say that going back to the real Lara Croft after this will be a pleasure. I couldn't really recommend this to anyone who thinks it's a Lara Croft outing. Gone is all the humour, wit and feeling; true this girl has a fight on her hands, but the story is so wobbly, it's little wonder she doesn't smile at all. Then there are those ridiculous boss battles. True, in life there might be the ocassional baddie hiding behind a bush somewhere, but not on the scale we get served here. Too, I suppose I should've seen it coming, that the baddies got bigger and more brutal as this story unfolded. Just like Gears of War (again). At the end, I just couldn't care, and can only say that it was a pleasure to finish and put on the shelf; such a pity I preordered and had to pay so much for my enthusiasm. Quite apart from anything else, this girl weighs about 7 stone wet, and is supposed to be at uni or something like that, doing studies into whatever it was she and her mates were looking for, she would've got eaten alive by the baddies presented here; she started as a whimpish bookworm and then wanted us to believe she'd turned into GI Jane with knobs on. Nah, just didn't wash. Then there's the silly logic behind the story: she gets caught several times by a really nasty bunch, who've thought nothing of shooting their way to a fun weekend. I mean, there are so many dead bodies around, i could almost smell them in the end. So, in time-honoured, fashion, when Miss Croft gets caught, well, she'd get a bullet for her trouble - end of video game, I'm afraid. Just to keep things going, the really kind baddies do the usual "lock her up some place, and we'll find a cooking or cleaning job for her". They just wouldn't; they've proved themselves utterly heartless all the way through, and (slight spoiler) as the story wasn't really about Lara, well, she's only extra baggage and one more mouth to feed. She'd have been offed and the baddies would go back to their card game, or whatever. Then there's the rather silly weapons and skills upgrades. I thought, for a moment, that I was back in Far Cry! For a very slight lady, with no pockets, she ends up carrying a veritable arsenal about her persons; something I've never really thought realistic. Reminds me of playing Black a few years ago, on Black Ops level. you could have a rocket launcher with unlimited ammo; made for a lot of silly fun, because nobody could mess with somebody that awesome. On a techcnical point; the "rockets" in a rockets launcher weigh a good few pounds each; you'd be hard pressed to carry 5 let along 1,000,000, and this game gave me the same itch I couldn't scratch (in fairness, she didn't have any bazookers, but she had the rest of the kitchen sink). A game that really got this right was "I Am Alive" where you were lucky to have one round in one gun for the most part of the time. Too, bearing in mind that Miss Croft does a lost of falling over between all the getting caught, so how was she always able to pick up her kit in no seconds flat. This is a pretty game, in parts, but the story is really dry. I can only think that the majority of those who gave it 5 stars are either new to Lara Croft (if not video gaming) or they think this is the latest Call of Duty. I've read a number of these reviews, and have to scratch my head somewhat, because I don't see where all the glowing praise comes from. It's only forgiveable if they've never played a Lara Croft game before; if they have played one, well, shame on them for missing the point. I've little doubt that I'll get hordes of the UK's finest baying for my blood for saying this game sucks: if they'd called it, say, "Sally Brown has a bad hair day" then I'd not have complained, but kidnapping a classic name and badging this twaddle under its heading is misleading to say the least. Classic dillema, not to review, or review and have to give it a star. I'd like Amazon to provide the opportunity for people to give zero or minus stars, because that's the direction I'd liked to have taken this. As it is the software wants me to give it at least one star: I do so under protest, as I feel this game is well off the mark. Eh, for a Lara Croft game, that is - it's a wonderfully silly first outing for "Sally Brown"!

Fantastic! Tremendous! Worth the Wait!
It's been a long time coming, the reinvention of the revolutionary franchise that changed the world of gaming, forever.. Having been hooked from the original Tomb Raider, through every episode and change, I was very excited when the game arrived, and it did not disappoint! It is very different from the original Tomb Raider games, in that Lara and the gaming world she now calls 'home' has evolved into a phenominal place, started be herself back in 96'. If you're an old school Tomb Raider fan, then do not expect to be taken back to your youth! The controls are smooth, the graphics are simply amazing, and the story line makes the game all the more thrilling. You are not submerged into a world where Lara is already the hardened survivor and Tomb Raider that we all fell for back then, yet a scared young woman who is about to embark on a journey that that turns her into the heroine that we all know and love. From the off you are learning the initial skills in order to survive the environment around you, that can change without warning, putting you straight into a tough learning curb, that once mastered, will have you reaching places you thought not possible. In addition, as this is not Lara as we know her, the removal of constantly raiding tombs actually brings a welcome change, tombs being optional to raid, as and when you find them. Instead, we are taken on journey accross a mysterious island and the young heroine is pushed into a role she believes herself not cut out for, or really wants. As already mentioned, controls are very smooth, the AI seems resonably inteligent, which makes things far more interesting, and makes you consider exactly how you, as the player, approach situations, as each action you make can have severe consequences, if you choose the wrong path. This is more of a 'be cautious' than 'throw caution to the wind' kind of game. The puzzles are well thought out, not too easy, just difficult enough to make you use your brain, the use of survival instinct is a great mode, allowing you to see things that might assist you, but does not give you the solution, it's up to you to find out how to use the environment around you. I have really enjoyed playing this so far, and cannot wait to continue the story. I have yet to wander into the multi-player area yet so am not in a position to comment on that part of the game, however, if the single player campaign is anything to go by, then I look forward into venturing in. I rarely write reviews, only if I believe it warrants it, and this does. Congratulations to Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics for making a truly fantastic game, from art, to gameplay, to soundtrack. You have taken the time to create something the Tomb Raider fans will enjoy and not rushed out some shoddy piece of work to cash in. Not only have you done justice to the Tomb Raider franchise, but taken it to a place where Tomb Raider can once again be a dominant franchise in todays gaming world. I really hope this is the begining of further Tomb Raider games that will excite the imagination of a new generation, keeping Lara where she should be, at the top of the gaming heroine list! I recommend this game Highly!

Comparatively lacking in stardust
I sometimes think it's unfair when artwork gets judged according to it's comparative merits. However, when something is produced that is so strikingly similar to other pieces available, those comparisons become inevitable. As has been mentioned on here already, Tomb Raider is almost identical in game-play to games like Uncharted and The Last of Us. Clear a room of enemies, scale a wall using various tools and move on. Now, admittedly there is MORE variation in Tomb Raider when compared to Uncharted and The Last of Us (in particular with your ability to roam the island environment) unfortunately these differences are minor when judging the game's enjoyability when compared to the other titles. And when it comes down to it, Tomb Raider is let down badly by a plodding storyline and poor-to-the-point-of-irritating acting from the main characters. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy this type of game, I was hooked on Uncharted and The Last of Us, but both these titles had more imaginative and compelling stories, of course in different ways. While The Last of Us was dramatic, tense and tugged at the heart-strings, Uncharted was a bit debonair and more fun, while at the same time staying engrossing. The story in Tomb Raider, however, never really seems to have the same umph. Admittedly, there are times that the game was exciting, which is why I have awarded it 3 stars, it wasn't as though it was a game that was so lacking that it was just unplayable. Quite the opposite. I do feel, however, that a little more thought could've gone into the construction of the game in relation to the overall story. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, and maybe it's just my personal preference, but (as has been mentioned) if this game aspires to be a version of Indiana Jones (as Uncharted undoubtedly did) then it needs a bit of zest to the story. I suppose it boiled down to the fact that none of the characters were particularly endearing, especially compared to Drake from Uncharted and Tess, Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us. This lack of connection with the characters was compounded by the acting. Oh the acting. Woefully stereotyped villains with terribly put on accents, and the protagonist Lara, dear oh dear. A terrible 'proper' English accent coupled with downright wooden delivery of key lines made me pretty fed up of her by the end. Lara Croft is obviously a fantastic potential character, but to make her so dreary, bland and lacking in any redeeming characteristics means she pales in comparison with the aforementioned characters in similar games. As you can probably tell, I'm a stickler for a gripping storyline. Either make the characters fun and debonair so good acting isn't a must, or employ really fantastic actors if you intend on making the story dark and mysterious. Tomb Raider achieves neither. If this game was alone in its genre it wouldn't matter so much, but when there are other games out there with much the same layout, storyline and acting becomes the only way you can set yourself apart. Unfortunately Tomb Raider fails in this regard. To reiterate, this fact did not make the game completely worthless, it just meant that I felt it did not quite measure up to the competition, hence the 3 stars.
