why cant i remove existing knob

I think they're designed to not come off. Mine was broken - a part at the back had snapped, which is why I purchased these as a replacement. These now don't come off. I think you may have to snap/break your existing ones - although I could be wrong.

5mm across flat part of spindle and 4mm from flat part to arc of circle
