That should not be a problem at all. Not much processing for the unit itself and should connect via optical in on the pro 40 giving you 8 more digital ins.

Can you use this machine without an interface just as a preamp

Yes plus it has also a phantom power option if your mics support that.

Does this act as an input extention for a umc 1820? as in will it take me from 8 to 16 inputs?

If you bought two of these you can have and additional 16 ins and 16 outs as your umc 1820 has x2 ADAT ins and outs. So yes, with one ADA8200, you will gain an additional x8 ins and outs.

Does this include an optical adat cable or will i need to buy one separately?
