Probably the best general-purpose B&W film on the market.
I discovered Ilford HP4 back in the mid-1970's. By the time I was doing photography professionally, HP4 had become HP5... with the cutting-edge for the time structured grain. Develop in D76/ID11 or whatever version of Agfa Rodinal you can manage to mix for yourself. Watch the temperature of your chemistry, including the wash water. Use a wash aid and store the negatives in polymer sleeves... not glassine envelopes. Years ago, I used this product in my Leica M3 with a 90mm Leitz Canada Tele-Elmarit as I leaned over a smelly dumpster to take a photograph of then presidential candidate Ronald Reagan receiving a dog as a gift from a supporter. I ended up having to crop the resultant image series a bit, but it held up well enough to produce acceptable sharpness as an 11x14 enlargement. If need be, this film can be pushed to 800 & 1600 speeds, but as my first photography teacher Herr Walter Kolbe once angrily told me, "With ASA 400 film, you can take a photograph in almost any kind of light... IF YOU KNOW HOW!" You have to just imagine his German accent. He lived in Hanau, Germany back in the day. So, as Herr Kolbe pointed out to me so forcefully in 1976, if you do your job properly, the film will do it's job as well. You certainly can make use of the "f/8 and be there" adage, but you can do so much more if you just make a little bit of effort. That said, the "be there" part of this equation is the most important element.

Nice Contrast, Forgiving Expsoure
I have a Contax G2 and was looking for a nice B&W 400 ASA film. In the 80's I shot and developed a lot of Tri-X and came to appreciate the nice quality and fine grain. The HP5 seems to recreate that feeling but with more contrast. It has lots of dynamic range so it is forgiving for some challenging lighting situations. It gives that high contrast look and can compress the background just a bit. I find myself narrowing my depth of field to add depth. Some folks may not like the grain of this faster film, but I love it. Took some photos of Paris in the winter and a few shots on set in Ireland. I was very pleased with the results. Attached photos shot at 400 ASA with a Contax G2 with a 2.8 28MM lens auto metering.

I have just developed my first two films and they look good. The experience that Ilford has really is obvious and they have made some excellent films here. One a side note however, I realsied after looking for some more that this is the most expensive way to purchase this film (marginally) £25.75 for 5 films is £5.15 each They are on amazon for £4.99 each individually There is also a 10 film bundle for £46.75 which is £4.67 each. Just something I thought that would be worthwhile noting. The expiry date on the box is March 2020 for mine bought in August 2016 so plenty of time to get though them although people have had good results from HP5+ with film that has been in a draw for decades!
