Fodor's Essential Japan (Full-color Travel Guide)

Great material and suggestions! In an increasingly digital world, there’s something satisfying about a travel book still. After the trip, it serves as a reminder of the adventure, and is even more useful for a return trip once you have a basic understanding of the are.

Good info nice size book

Book is a very detailed and reliable with detailed information on Japan. Used it extensively on a recent trip to Japan and found it very useful. I wish it had better detailed maps of the metro system. Taxis can be expensive in Japan and we used the metro often.

We gave this book to brother in law who lived in Japan as a child. Trip in May is planned and said this will come in handly. He is in his 60's, so lot of things have changed. Excited to see their photos from the trip. Never been disappointed in Fodor travel books. He was thrilled to get this book to help them plan their activities.

When I travel, I prefer having a real guide book, as I don't have to rely on finding a reliable wifi connection on my mobile, or use up massive memory on my phone. Fodor's has always been my go-to guide book if there isn't a Time-Out or Harvard's Let's Go guide on the country/city. Helps with just about everything, from how to navigate public transportation, to finding a good bar or hotel.

Great book to get around

A colorful and detailed travel guide that not only covers all the travel planning essentials (hotel, flight, transportation, food, recommended itineraries) but also immerses you in Japanese etiquette and culture. In addition, there are detailed maps that show the sights, hotels, and restaurants in all the major tourist cities. In my opinion, this is equivalent to Rick Steve's books on European countries. Whether you are planning a one-week trip or a 3-week trip to Japan, this book will not disappoint.

Disappointed in Lonely Planet, we dug into Fordor's and won! This is a working guide to a very foreign place. The any hints on crowds, not just at the sights but, CRITICALLY, for tram, RR, bus, and metro. Fodor's is practical, Lonely Planet was a Wikipedia of too much of the unnecessary.

Ik heb een paar boeken geprobeerd over reizen in Japan en ik heb gemengde gevoelens over dit boek. Het boek bevat enorm veel nuttige informatie en op basis hiervan zou ik het iedereen aanraden. (ik vond het zelfs beter dan de concurrentie) Maar het boek heeft 1 groot nadeel en dat is dat de kwaliteit van de blaadjes en de kaft echt ondermaats is. Ik was bang dat de pagina's zouden verscheuren met normaal gebruik van het boek. Daarnaast kun je niet alle inhouden lezen zonder het boek helemaal open te klappen, maar ik vreesde hierbij dat de blaadjes daardoor los zouden laten uit het boek. Heel jammer. Als de kwaliteit van het boek beter was dan had ik het zeker gehouden. Ik geef het uiteindelijk 4 sterren omdat ik de inhoud toch enorm goed vond en als je het niet erg als je boek beschadigd raakt raad ik het boek toch aan.

I have to admit that I'm a diehard Fodor's fan and for every single holiday I plan I purchase a Fodor's guide. This one did not disappoint. I love everything about it - the paper, the writing, the insider tips, etc. I'd love it if it had a few more pictures but I still really enjoy it as it is. Some other reviews mentioned that it was light on the Tokyo section but I really don't think so. I ended up buying a Fodor's Tokyo guide as well and it had a few more suggestions for hotels and restaurants but it wasn't remarkably more fleshed out. I'm super happy with this one and I can't wait for my trip in October. Highly recommend!

Quality is very poor. History section slim. Whole book is too small to have any real recommendations.
