could I put a wire bound note book it in? or only a pad of paper....

The issue is the opening for the pad. It is in the top so to secure, only a pad of paper would slide in. Now I have seen spiral bound pads with a back that would slide down into the slot but unsure where those were from.

Imagine the difference between a softcover and hardcover book. Hardbound here means the left and right sides are stiff, rather than floppy. They have a stiff board with cloth sewn to cover the inside.
