Is this what school nurses in the 50s used to swab sore throats with?

No. The real Merthiolate has been banned in the U.S. This is missing the ingredient Thimersol. The only place I found the actual Merthiolate was on Ebay and it came from Viet Nam. The original is a fantastic antiseptic. Don't waste your money on this. It's just basically alcohol.

Is it clear in color?

No the tincture is not clear in color . It is orange. But lke I stated before I have both and the colorless one does not work like this tincture with color. I do not know why but if you are home or the cut is in a hidable place then by all means use the colored tincture for the best relief of the pain. The stinging is only in the orange colored one not the colorless for whatever reason and this is what stops the pain of a cut or abrasion. Years of experience here with merthiolate!

Hot stuff. Works Great!

This is way better than triple antibiotic cream. It lets the wound heal together where there is no greasy film to cause it to heal slowly. Used this stuff for over 60 years. I started out crying at a young age as it stings a little. But as you get older just waiting for that brief moment and blowing on it . lol Great Stuff and if you ever get like an ingrown nail. The best to keep infection out.

Great antiseptic!

Merthiolate is THE best antiseptic for small booboos, like paper cuts. Nothing else like it! Received the little bottle in no-time. I'd probably use the bigger bottle of Betadine for larger injuries, but this merthiolate I've used for years; just lost the bottle in a recent move. Thanks, Amazon!!

Mercury free and Amazon Has It

Well, it's Merthiolate and works. It has disappeared from store shelves here in Arizona so the only way to get it or Mercurochrome or iodine is to cross into Mexico and it's readily available in the Farmacia's there. Glad Amazon has it.
