I like to watch movies on my iPad and I was looking for a bluetooth speaker because I did not want to deal with wires, sometimes I do not like using headphones, and the iPad's own speaker is simply not loud or good enough. With a certain amount of trepidation I went with this Jambox with the fear that this was just another "computer speaker."Instead I have found that the Jambox is exactly what I have been looking for. I'll begin with the end: the Jambox is quite loud and features pretty decent quality sound. No, not the same as a big set of stereo speakers, but pretty good quality including decent bass. My ears are no longer what they were when I was twenty, and I need speakers that can provide decent volume. The Jambox does. It can fill my den with sound. It does the job. I was surprised. Incidentally the Jambox paired with my iPad quickly with no hassle.The second excellent attribute of the Jambox is the hardware. The unit itself is built very nicely, and it is small, which is appropriate if you are using it for portability along with an iPad or similar device. It has a built-in battery that charges with the same Micro-USB cable that works on a Kindle Fire, which charger and cable is provided with the Jambox. Further, the Jambox "talks to you" when you start trying to use it. When you first turn it on it tells you that it is trying to acquire a bluetooth device. There is a button on the top which, when pressed will tell you the status of the battery charge, i.e. "the battery is three-fourths charged" or "charging" if indeed you are charging, or "charging is complete" when done. This takes all of the hassle and guesswork out of using the Jambox.The first thing a new user will want to do is to update the firmware in the Jambox on the Jambox website. Naturally, I expected a hassle. I was delighted that the process went perfectly with no problem. You go to the website, turn the Jambox "off" but hook it up to your computer's USB port with the supplied USB cable. Download the Jambox software, and the software immediately recognized my Jambox and asked if I wanted to update the firmware. Click "yes" and that is that--everything went perfectly. There are nifty little apps and things on the website such as different voices for your Jambox and whatnot.Overall I am very satisfied with the Jambox and I rate it five stars. It is pretty close to ideal for movies or music on a small bluetooth device such as an iPad, Kindle Fire, or the like. RJB.

Over the weekend, I purchased a Jawbone JAMBOX (Black Diamond), on sale-- down from $199 to $149. It is an interesting piece of technology and design which allows you to play music wirelessly using a bluetooth connection from your phone, tablet, or computer. It's supposed to go for 10+ hours on a single charge (I believe it, though haven't actually tested), and really does sound very good for it's diminutive size (6 x 1.6 x 2.8 inches ; 12 ounces).It's a funny little guy. First off, it's small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, and has a solid quality feel to it. It's currently on sale here at Amazon for $149, but even at that price many may find it's a tad expensive for what you get. You can certainly find cheaper speakers which sound as good, but they aren't as small nor as portable. And, the audio, while fine for my tastes, may disappoint those who really like to rock out, as it's just not really all that loud. Still, there's something intangible about the combo stereo speaker/speakerphone product, which I very much like.Perhaps it's the Olivetti type rubberized controls and the simplicity of operation. Like many Apple products, it "just works." You can configure it with custom voices and other special features by going to Jawbone's website and downloading new MY TALK software for it. I don't know of any other speakers with this sort of functionality. And the LiveAudio patch creates amazing stereo separation from a six inch long speaker! You really have to hear it to believe. The speakerphone is okay, but not omni-directional.All in all, I'm very satisfied, even though I had to replace my first one because the battery couldn't take a charge. I recommend the JAMBOX as a personal speaker for those who do not listen to music at really loud volumes.And for those who already own one, or are intending to buy one, there are a few important things to note, which aren't explained very well in the documentation.Here are a few observations which I believe may help others who are new owners of JAMBOX.a. You can't check battery status UNLESS the Jambox is already paired AND unplugged from a charging source. This of course makes no sense, and is not documented anywhere, but two separate calls to support have confirmed this. I wish the interface designers paid as much attention to the software part of this as the engineers did. There are numerous issues with software user interface feedback. I can't for the life of me understand why you can't check the battery status without being paired.b. Be sure and upgrade to the 2.1 software. There are numerous voices which can be added PLUS the all important LiveAudio binaural algorithms are installed which allow for much better Right Left music separation (note, turn OFF LiveAudio when listening to movies and the voices are much crisper). Also, there is a new setting called "Sound Clarity" which, when turned on, reduces the clipping and distortion of the speaker when turned up fully. This can reduce the volume for those extra loud passages. IMO, it's worthwhile.c. When using with Bluetooth, you should set your originating device to max volume, then use the + - buttons on the Jambox to mitigate volume.d. When using an audio cable, do not set the originating device to max volume, but rather 1/2 to 3/4 volume, so as to not overdrive the devices amplification, causing clipping and distortion on the Jambox.e. Don't forget, you need to press the + and - buttons WHILE THE UNIT IS ON to toggle LiveAudio on and off. Because of the signal attenuating algorithms, LiveAudio plays less loud than the regular mode, so when you toggle it off, be sure and press the + button to make it play louder in the regular mode.f. If you are using the Jambox with an audio cable and NOT bluetooth, then the LiveAudio is forced OFF and cannot be turned on. IOW, LiveAudio can only be toggled on/off and used when paired with a bluetooth device.g. I've been told by two service reps that instructions on 'resetting' Jambox on their forum and FAQ are incorrect. The FAQ says,1. While the JAMBOX is ON, hold down the TALK button (circular button)2. Plug in the JAMBOX to the charger. The charger must be plugged in to power.3. Once the JAMBOX is plugged in to the charger, you can release the TALK button.These are WRONG! Number 1 above should be (2 & 3 are the same)1. While the JAMBOX is OFF, hold down the TALK button (circular button)Unfortunately, and again due to poor interface design, there is NO SIGNAL when this has been accomplished correctly.

I bought this on a whim while on sale, after already owning a Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II - Nylon. I love the Bose and it has great sound, and while it's portable it's not "daily portable" like this device. I recently bought the Jawbone Up and loved it, and wanted to try another Jawbone product.About the device aesthetics & initial use:This is the little speaker that can. It's beautiful, designed with a resilient hard rubber bottom and top, assembled like a German product and works great. Charging it fully took a bit longer than I'd hoped, but I've used it for several hours a day for several days and still haven't had to charge it yet.Unlike the Bose, this device is a little smarter to verbally announce when it's in pairing mode, verbally responds with battery level etc. and generally provides more quick useful feedback than devices that only use icons to indicate status.Usage wise, it is a Bluetooth speaker and paired easily with my iPhone. The range is as good as the Bose so I'm able to traverse my loft apartment without having any disconnections. Once connected I never hear any static or disruptions to the sound.About the sound:Clean and loud enough to be heard the next room away. Bass is less pronounced than the larger Bose that I have, but you can really "feel" the bass in this unit if you're touching it. Placing it on a surface that will reverberate the bass vibrations really increases the bass level. It's a trade off for me on big bass with the Bose, or a little less bass but great portability with this one.I paired both the Bose and this device to my phone and sampled many songs, switching back and forth seamlessly between the devices to hear the difference. You might think the Bose would win every time since it's larger, but that's not the case. There were several tracks (usually more acoustic ones) where I felt this unit better delivered the rich detail of the track while the Bose sounded like the mids and highs had been turned down.A HUGE important part about this device: There is a software update available for it, so you should plug it in with the Jawbone updater app as soon as you get it. It adds a live audio function that for me is a deal maker. Before the update I was not that pleased with the device. If you want less of a stereo sound and simply volume, you can turn the live audio off but so far I've always preferred the live audio sound to the louder volume.So why this device instead of the Big Jambox or the Bose? Real portability-- you could easily toss this in a jacket pocket or a backpack and not feel like you're over-burdening overall weight for music. The device is 1/4 the size of the Bose, yet performs far more than 1/4 the sound, usefulness and convenience.I haven't used the device for a Bluetooth phone speaker yet, but probably will. If/when that happens I will update this review.If there were one thing I'd like to improve it might be some of the bass reproduction. I'm already amazed at what it can do in such a tiny size though. I don't think I'd want to increase device size for more bass. It fits right in it's category of size/sound production/value. While playing around with it I ended up sitting it on my chest and listening to it. You can really feel the bass that way and it's almost like the personal listening space of headphones without having to wear headphones. A very relaxing immersive experience.Also, feel free to ask any questions in the comments and I'll do the best to get back to you very quickly!Finally-- the shape design shown in the picture of the front grill is not nearly as pronounced in person as it is in the photo. Don't let that mislead you into thinking it has a huge indention in the front. It doesn't.

I hate to say it, but it looks like this company produced a defectively designed product. The mini USB connector is obviously a weak link in the design. This product broke due to manufactures defect 13 months after purchase and they claimed they could do nothing to help me. I loved my Jawbone JAMBOX when I received it. Amazing sound quality and I was happy with the ease of setup. Unfortunately as there customer support admitted to me, they have had ongoing problems with the USB charging port becoming loose and falling into the unit, therefor you can no longer charge your JAMBOX.Ok, so these things happen. When I contacted support, I was told that because I had purchased it through a third party on Amazon.com, it was a third-party purchase, and not covered by any warranty. But if you know there was a defective run on your product, why would you not have an option for your clients *who paid a top dollar premium for your product* to be able to send there unit back in for refurbishment? I am not looking for a free replacement, but to tell me there is no option of having the product that you sold me and freely admit is defective fixed through your company is outrageous. I had told my friends and family what a great product this was. Now I have had another friend call and tell me he has had the exact same terrible experience with Jambox that I have had. First off, this item was identified as prime and in stock, sold by Amazon. I ordered Monday, 24 Sep 12, within time limit to receive on 26 Sep 12. Did not receive until 28 Sep 12....what's the point of continuing prime membership when items are sent snail mail and delivered two days late?Product issues - product packed loose in box so rattling around (in regular mail no less). Jam box speaker knocked loose in retail package, probably because of poor boxing and using snail mail. First thing I checked based on reviews here was year on bottom of retail package...sure enough 2010 and NOT 2012. Needless to say I was apprehensive about functionality. Got speaker out of package...no easy feat since I wanted to make sure I could return if necessary. Got her charged up and paired with iPhone. Worked like a champ, though sounded pretty sterile. I have a Big Jambox, so may have been expecting a bit much. Next was to update to recent firmware and get on live sound. If you read the forums at jambox, you'll see why I was REALLY apprehensive about doing that. But, once again, worked like a champ and I don't seem to be experiencing the ultra low volume many have after updating. It is a tad less, but the improvement in sound is well worth the slight volume trade off...plus if you want party sound, get a BIG Jambox.I do have concerns about the Mini USB port used for charging and updates. You'll find many complaints about it breaking and bricking Jambox speakers, and I can see why...appears to be very cheaply made and recessed into the speaker too far. Still good for me, but only engaged 5-6 times so far. This is probably why they went to a separate power plug on the big jam box, which is a traditional power receptacle.While I am disappointed Amazon decided it was okay to send me old stock (long time customer, hundreds of orders over lots of years), so far the speaker is okay. I ordered it at 149...had I paid 199 it would be on its way back already...and still might, 149 is a lot to drop on two year old "new" technology. I use Bluetooth a lot, so I should know in short order if USB port breaks.Bottom line...I am kind of wishing I just got a second BIG Jambox...and if this goes back, that's exactly what I will get to replace it. Difference in quality and sound is night and day, and well worth the extra $$!

I'll make this short and sweet. I had a X-Mini II Capsule Speaker that was my go-to beach accessory. Unfortunately it didn't survive a rogue wave to my backpack. I wanted something a bit louder and the idea of keeping my iPod safely in my new waterproof backpack led me to the JAMBOX.The first thing you'll notice is the packaging, it's updated from most of the un-boxing videos on YouTube but it's almost a shame to throw it away. It comes with everything, two different length charger cords, AC adapter, case with magnetic flaps, stereo > stereo cable (for non bluetooth) and the manual. Jawbone didn't skimp out on quality either; all the cables are flat and very nice looking.Pairing the device was SO easy. It immediately went into pair mode with I flipped on the switch. My iPod touch saw it as JAWBONE JAMBOX. Click and done! No codes or pins of any kind. The sound from Pandora was really good, more bass than I was expecting from such a small device. I through on my beach mix and the first 320bit Mp3 to play was "Need you tonight" by INXS. I cranked it up, listened to the entire song at full volume and then walked over and tossed the packaging in the trash. Sold!My one issue was was the bluetooth distance from the iPad 2. For some reason it would cut out when moving 2 or 3 feet away from the JAMBOX. It was interesting to hear NBA Jam switch from my iPad speakers to the JAMBOX... the difference is incredible. The Bluetooth range from my iPod touch was roughly 15 feet (plus a wall) before it cut out so I'm guessing it's an issue with the iPad and not the JAMBOX.For those of you who can't wait to play with your new toys, you'll be happy to know it comes with 3/4 of the battery charged.PROS:* VERY SMALL* Solid as a rock* Great range with my iPod touch* Voice Control of my iPod touch (SWEET!)* Amazing battery life* Comes with everything you need* Very simple to pair devices (no codes to enter)CONS:* Range with iPad 2 was only 2 feet before it cut out... I'm not sure what the deal is* ExpensiveOVERALL:I'm a firm believer in getting what you pay for. If you're cheap and want an amazing product for the price, get the X-Mini II Capsule Speaker (it rocks!). If you have a love for gadgets and high quality then you'll have no regret with this purchase. Remember what you're buying. This is NOT a speaker that's going to rock your house or bring crowds from the beach. It is however the perfect travel companion for hotel rooms, multimedia presentations and entertaining a small group of friends at the beach. I didn't use the speakerphone so this review doesn't cover that at all.

I've always used docks for listening to books or music on my iPhone. They are all okay, but even the Bose is nothing special. Also, docks take up precious counter space in my RV when we're traveling. Furthermore, I have a Nook Tablet loaded with music, but there is no dock for that, and the Tablet doesn't have Bluetooth. I found out that the Jawbone speaker comes with a 3.5 audio cable which would fit into my Nook Tablet.When the Jambox arrived, I not only tested it with the Nook Tablet, I paired it with my iPhone. If you have an iPad, you can pair it with that, too. It will pair with any bluetooth device or any device with a 3.5 outlet for audio on it.It is very easy to set up except for one thing. Fort Knox probably doesn't have its gold packaged so securely as the Jawbone was. It took my husband and me about 1/2 hour to extract the speaker from its boxes, but, after that, it worked like a dream. The bluetooth connected in seconds. I put the audio cable in the Nook Tablet and was instantly rewarded with full,rich sound.When listening to Yo Yo Ma on my iPhone, the cello sounded as if it were in the room. Rock music sounded very good as well, better than my docks did. If you like to blare music, however, this might not get loud enough for you. However, I am hard of hearing and it was loud enough for me, even on Audible books, to hear well even when I wasn't using my hearing aid.It takes 2 1/2 hours to charge fully, but after that, you can listen on it for hours without the battery needing recharging. If you press a button on it, a voice says to you, "Battery is about full,"--or whatever your battery status is.The Jambox comes with a sturdy black suede cover so you can take it with you. Because of its battery, you can use it on the beach or outdoors.One other thing: if you pair this with your phone, when calls come in, it stops playing and acts like a speakerphone. That can be useful unless you are trying to hide calls from whoever is with you, listening. For me, it's great. I can continue cooking or washing dishes and still get my phone calls.Did I tell you, it's my favorite color blue? It fits in a man's hand. People coming in when I'm playing music on it say in wonder, "Is that coming from that little blue thing?" Sure is.
