Well first of all, I saw at least one review claiming this isn't real leather, and while I'm no expert, I have absolutely no reason to believe it isn't. It has a slightly chemical smell but otherwise smells like leather to me. Furthermore, unlike my fake leather goods, it does actually absorb water. So for what it's worth, after some research I believe it to be real leather. Beyond that, it's gorgeous, practical, and very good quality. I spent hours browsing Amazon for a new journal and ultimately landed on this one. Now that I have it in hand, I know I made the right decision. It's a good size, not so large that it's cumbersome to carry in a medium handbag, and not so small that it's awkward and uncomfortable to write in. The leather cover itself allows enough room to actually hold ear buds or a USB cable (or maybe both at the same time, I haven't tried) in the left inside pocket and still snap closed. It leaves a bit of a bulge obviously (the headphones are inside the journal in the pics I posted of it closed as well and you can barely tell), but it isn't tight and awkward and if you keep your journal on you all the time and enjoy tunes or need a cable for charging, this would be ideal. So the cable straps are actually a really nice extra touch. The notebooks are also pretty solid. Good, thick paper, and they lay flat. I always get wavy lines of writing on unlined paper, but maybe I'll give it a go and eventually get better at keeping my own lines lol. If not, I ordered a couple of lined A5 notebooks as future refills anyway. It's really nice that the journal comes with 2 notebooks in the first place. Anyway, I only do more detailed reviews on stuff I really like, and I really like this journal. If you want a journal that's sturdy, handy, refillable, and looks beautiful, I'd very much recommend this one (and I'm super picky).

Got my journal cover yesterday, and I absolutely love this product! I had a few apprehensions coming into the purchase because of some past experiences with leather covers, but this defies all previous experiences. 1. Staining: I’d had some problems with leather covers in the past where they would stain paper and journals from the oils used in curing the leather. This journal cover does not do this! It’s clean and stylish, and it doesn’t leave any marks on my journals, a huge benefit for me. 2. Convenience: I wanted a cover that I could use again and again, and I wanted something I could keep extra items in. This cover has an excellent pen loop on the spine, and it holds my fineliner pens snug, even without a clip. The front inside pocket is great for my extra papers or a set of earbuds, and the standard A5 notebook size means that I can use it again and again. 3. Style and Durability: I love the minimalistic and rustic design of this journal, but it’s also built with sturdy stitching and high quality materials. The finish is great, since scratches and marks can be rubbed back out or left for a nice patina. I love the feel of the leather as well. Along with the cover itself, I was excited it came with two quality notebooks (one lined, one blank) and two headphone/cord clips made from the same leather as the cover. All of it came in a nice box, which could easily be given as a gift without any extra repackaging or fuss. Honestly, this might be one of my favorite purchases in a long time!

It feels, looks, and smells like real leather. Even if it is not, it is of good quality and looks amazing. It lays flat. It is sturdy but soft. I wish it came with 2 lined pads but it is refillable so that does not matter. It is a great size and perfect for journaling.

I'd rate this 4.5 if I could, but I rounded down. First, I doubt you could find a better value anywhere. Everything appears to be good quality including the included notebooks (one blank, one lined). There appears to be a question as to whether it's actually leather, but if it's not genuine leather, it's the best fake leather I've ever encountered and doesn't detract from the overall quality. My requirements I was looking for in a journal cover was decent quality, leather, pen holder, A5 size, and for less than $60. This is the only thing I've found that comes close and it nails it with two notebooks and some wire clasps for bonuses. My only critique is that the top cover could be about 0.25-0.5 inches longer to better accommodate pens. A Pilot Metropolitan leaves part of the notebook exposed but a slimmer pen fits just fine. Edit: Because I was curious about whether the leather was real or a plastic derivative, I took one of the wire clasps (which are actually quite useful for throwing some earbuds in the journal on the go) and held it to flame for a few seconds, on both sides until the rivet was hot. The material did not react & melt as you would expect from plastic. the underside charred a bit but that was it. So I do in fact believe this to be real leather.

After purchasing/using myself. Paper gives an exceptional and satisfying writing experience, journal lays flat, refills are available, and the smell transforms the mind and says, "Ahhh, time to write." Have gifted around 15 to youth and aspiring writers, along with classic BIC Crystal pens (don't fade, waterproof, smooth writing). Journaling and/or just free-writing is extraordinarily beneficial and this journal is superior. Wish they would make a cover to hold two journals at once. Then I can have lined and unlined journals in one place.

Bought for my son who is picky about journals, and he loves it. Great quality and well made.
