Q: Can this safely be used on a shure sm7b and is it beyyer than the cheaper fethead you carry?

Yes, it can be used with the Shure SM7b. The Germanium version of the Fethead will provide 29 dB of gain while the normal version will provide 27 dB of gain. However, the normal Fethead does not color your sound while the Germanium version adds a bit of color. I opted for the Germanium version and am quite happy with it. The coloration of the sound is not really all that noticeable to me. You probably will be happy with either. Keep in mind that you will need 48v of phantom power to run the preamp so make sure that is turned on on your mixing board or interface.

Dead on arrival!

I wasn't able to review it because it was dead on arrival. It kills the signal completely and yes I am using it with phantom power - and it does nothing! Complete waste of time. This should've been tested when it was made and thrown in the waste bin at the manufacturing facility!!! What a huge disappointment.

I got this beauty hooked in between Mackie EM-99B and Rodecaster Duo - through a Mogami Gold. Absolute masterpiece! Strongly recommend the Germanium version - as it is superior to the silicone ones (modern).
