This stainless steel deep root watering tool penetrates hard pan soil effectively. My trees responded very well, with clear improvements in days to weeks. Leakage stays minimal unless the hose jerks, far less issue with a quality hose. It holds up durably with no bends or clogging from tough dirt. Easy to use and high quality, with no plastic except the fertilizer jar, which delivers nutrients straight to roots without stripping when handled properly. It’s good for a lot of soil types, especially if your soil is sandy, or just straight hard pan. It takes up minimal space and if stored properly guaranteed to last for a long time.

With the drought conditions in Colorado, I needed something to irrigate the roots of some young trees without wasting water. This was reasonably priced, is easy to use, and fits the bill perfectly. I can also use it to occasionally water the area that I have converted to a xeric garden. Even drought tolerant plants need to be occasionally watered in a hot, dry summer, and again, this gets the water to root level without evaporation. I marked the shaft that goes into the ground at the one foot mark so I can easily judge how deep I'm watering.

I hated the way this root feeder kept unscrewing itself, and I had to repeatedly re-tighten it as I went. Before 2nd use, I cleaned out the thread between top and bottom tubes. I wrapped plumber's tape around the thread, butted up to towards the top, covering just over half the thread. On the exposed thread, the one that screws into the bottom tube first, I applied Blue Loctite, the gel type. I screwed it as tight as I could by hand, then let is sit 24 hrs. That fixed the problem really well. I've used it just under 3 hrs since that fix and not once did I even see water leak between top and bottom half, much less have them come loose. The bottom tube has 4 holes in the conical part that goes into the dirt. Nice surprise, since I thought it had only 2. So, it pretty much injects in all directions. I have yet to see the holes clog up. I happen to have water always flowing out, if that makes any difference. The dispenser that came with the unit was damaged and it leaked a lot on first use. WALOTAR, the vendor, sent me a brand new unit + dispenser when I asked them for just the dispenser cylinder (wow). I had a hard time finding more dispensers to order. Well, besides the $100+ ones from Chapin (?). I finally found some by searching for 'soap dispenser'. I accidentally ordered one with a 'quick-connect'; it leaked with a spray everywhere. But the one that looks much like hte one that came with this unit, I think it will make a good backup. I'll also try it without attaching directly to the feeder; to see if that keeps it from developing leaks soon.

I was disappointed with this deep root tree watering tool. The stainless steel probe looked sturdy in the photos, but the actual product felt flimsy and bent slightly after only a few uses in moderately compact soil. The included valve and filter assembly also leaked around the connections, wasting water and making a mess. The concept is great for deep root watering, but the execution falls short. Setup was frustrating, and I never felt confident it was delivering water where it was supposed to. Definitely not worth the price in my experience.

This is a well built tool. It is made from stainless steel and has strong welds. It looks like it has been electropolished because of the smooth finish. There is a cone shaped tip that allows easy insertion into the ground. The plastic device for mixing chemicals is well built as well. I was able to deep feed my sick pine tree in just a few minutes. There are three settings (low, medium, and high) for how much chemicals you want to put into the ground. The clear plastic container shows how how fast the chemicals are being mixed but it could be larger. I had to refill the container quite often. The insertion tube could be longer for deeper penetration. Sometimes the water would come out of the ground where the tube was inserted - I just stood on either side and that stopped the water from coming out. I think this device is a good addition to any serious gardeners tools.

Overall, the product seems to be made well with heavy stainless, brass and plastic parts. Placement of the water holes was a key factor to avoid packing dirt in when placing the spike in the ground. I like this setup and it works very well. On assembly, Teflon tape is needed for threaded connections, which makes sense. If you buy one, the Teflon tape enclosed is flimsy, thin, and difficult to apply properly. I chucked the tape that came with the unit and used my own. The big issue with this unit are the incorrect sized threads for connecting the two lengths of tube/spike. The threads are mis-sized so regardless of normal applications of Teflon tape and a firm pressure to hand-tighten the two, the mis-sized threads will not secure the two pieces to prevent leaks. With a basic application of plumbers tape there's no way to tighten enough to prevent the two sections from wiggling slightly and leaking during use. My husband finally applied numerous very thick layers of Teflon tape to build up and fill in the gaps between the threads. This has worked so far but if it fails, I will try using liquid gasket material. The instructions cover most operations (see pictures). However, the flow settings are still a mystery when it comes to setting small to large flow of water (it can be difficult to tell if there's a change in the flow of fertilizer) and then setting a flow to flush the fertilizer bottle when finished. The last challenge is shared between the unit and the user. I found it is difficult to maintain a secure connection between the hose, the valve, and the fertilizer bottle during use. Once the hose is connected, the various pieces easily come loose or twist upside down when I move the unit between spots or adjust the water flow. I have learned to be very careful and check connections as I move around the bush/tree but it can be annoying. Again, this challenge is likely due to the product design and the gardener's skills. As for buying this product, I am on the fence a bit but with the quality materials I think I would purchase this again.

Very Disappointing. Huge leak at T-weld that sprayed more water onto the lawn that into my tree root system. This was occurred on its very 1st use. It was easy to insert the tube into the soil and there was no need to force it down. Totally useless product!
