Powerbuilt 14mm Back Tap Spark Plug Thread Repair Tool, Straightening Tool, Motorcycle Spark Plugs, Repairs Damaged Threads, Collapsible Design - 640811

Repaired a spark plug thread on a 60HP outboard motor. It saved about a $3000 engine repair (just guessing). The tool was perfect to use. It is a thread chaser not a thread tap. It cleaned the thread perfectly in accordance with the instructions. You need to use it with caution and have a lot of patience. For me I used a cotton swab first prior to using the tool as 90% of the metal shavings were imbedded in the swab and removed from the thread hole. Then I used the tool as directed 7 times to clean the threads. It worked great. Inserted the spark plug by hand then used the torque wrench to tighten the plug. Great tool and a life saver.

Kit is flimsey but did repair my 8hp snowblower head . Use a impact for the tap it works fine would buy again perfect for small engine repair i would buy a higher qaulity if i were to use it on automotive .

So many times the oxygen sensor base is corroded and the new sensor just will not thread in easily. Now I can clean the threads with the tool and make the job so much easier and no broken items or bleeding knuckles.

This thing is amazing. It works great. However, you do have to be careful. First off, if you unscrew it enough, the bottom could fall into the cylinder, so don’t do that. Also, especially after you’ve tightened it most of the way, it gets pretty difficult to tighten further. I ended up screwing it slightly into the bottom of the threads and then pressing it against the side at an angle to get enough friction to actually tighten it further. It suggests to run it through three or four times, but I was extra cautious (and also sometimes didn’t tighten it as much as I’d thought) and pulled it through seven or eight times before I actually had it fully tightened/opened (cleaning and regressing it every time). But nonetheless, it worked great and saved my bacon!

I bought this item to repair a stripped out spark plug hole in an outboard engine. The tap worked perfectly and the result is the engine is now back in service. The tap is easy to use and works exactly as advertised. The really nice feature of this construction is that none of the metal removed from the head found its way into the cylinder. We checked and double checked and not one scrap of metal got past the tap, all shavings were pulled to the outside of the engine. For the price, this tap is a steal. One hour of labor and we managed to do a job that normally would have taken several hours to accomplish and cost several hundred dollars. Every mechanic should have one of these in his/her tool box.

Brilliant design. Life saver when changing old spark plugs that have been in an alloy head for 25 years! (so the cylinder head threads are not in great condition). Perhaps the whole tool could be an inch longer, but I just used a long 1/2 inch socket as an extension. The knurled nut is a bit tricky to tighten up when you're up to your elbows in engine bay. Nevertheless I managed to chase out 4 spark plug holes on an ML430 where the engine bay is very tight on one side. A couple of the plugs were very hard to get out due to binding with the thread in the cylinder head, but after running this tool through them I was able to screw in the new plugs by hand (before torquing up to 25nm). I still have 12 more to do (there are 16 plugs on that engine!) and I'm considering cutting a slot in the end of the knurled nut so I can tighten it with a flat blade screwdriver. Make sure you apply a smear of sticky grease to the thread tap so that it collects any debris as you wind it out of the head.

I call this tool ''Tool doing miracles'' I purchased last february 15 2022 a used John Deere Lawn tractor with snowblower attachement. 6 weeks later I wanted to inspect the 2 spark plugs. The one at the right was OK just need a minor clean. Reinstall was easy. However the left spark plug was not that easy to reinstall because threads were stripped. After reserches I landed on this wonderful tool sold by Amazon. As soon as I have received it I rush to my tractor and did the job as recommended by the manufacturer. 3 passes were necessary and the thread came back as good as new. This tool at the end cost barely nothing because it will save you pain, tears and stress and lot of money. Install the tool in the spark plug hole up the end of threads, turn the adjusting screew to give some expension (3 passes) last pass at full expension. Turn slowly until it pops out and start next pass. The good thing compare to other tools (taps) is that you won't start repairing the threads from the outside and gradually going inside.....no, this tool starts from inside coming outside the hole gradually...... Wonderful. Who's the inventor???? He's awesome!!!!
