This set does not have a buffer, only used for filing. The description is incorrect; no buffing side in this set.

Q: How often can this be used to shine the nail? My nails are thin and I worry about wearing then down.

I have thin nails as well, the files are more gentle than you would think.. I use them regularly, no issues.

Q: Love the shine, but getting visible scratches.. How do I avoid this??

I wasn't impressed with this glass file set at all. The nail files scratches because the finish wore off. That was my chief complaint. These were very poor quality as they had a very short life span.
