A note about the scent itself...
The sticks come in a wonderfully sturdy box compared to most incenses and with a small light blue flowered ceramic square for burning the incense in for those who don't have a vertical burner. Obviously if you use the small square, it doesn't catch any ash, so be sure to place it on a safe surface. Note that you will likely need to burn them upright as they tend to stop burning at any section where they're leaning on something. These are Japanese in style, so they have no stick and at most there's only a tiny stub left when it's done burning. Be prepared for the size though: these are about half the size of most incense. Despite that, they do burn for a half hour+, so they aren't cheating you, don't worry. (A note to those having issues on short burning time: Try to ignite as little of the tip as possible. These light very easily and you actually want these to smolder. Not burn to the ground.) Something you should keep in mind when purchasing incense is the country of production. Incense from and found commonly in the western hemisphere tends to be very strong, especially in comparison to a country like Japan which favors subtlety. As such, if you're used to buying Gonesh, Hem, and Satya products, you might find Nippon Kodo's to be a little weak. That being said, it will never overpower those with strong noses or trigger anybody's allergies or headaches, which is wonderful if you share a household. This particular scent is a little different from most lavender scents out there. While it is floral, and reminiscent of lavender buds, it took me snuffing through my lavender bush to place it. If you ask me, it smells more of the lavender leaves and wood, less of the actual flowers. Then again, this may be because it is a bit subtle. Who knows. Either way, it is a lovely lavender fragrance, just not a strong one, so make note of that. If you think it may bug you, lavender is a classic scent and there are plenty more takes on it out there.

Smells great, worth the price.
These are much smaller than your typical incense stick, but for the price they are totally worth it. They are about half the length of a typical incense stick. I plan to buy more scents and would buy this one again. The smell is strongly lavender and the scent will easily fill a small to medium room. It's not unpleasantly strong, but I prefer not to sit right next to it as it burns either. It's not too smokey, doesn't smell like smoke or burning, and because it's the Japanese style incense there is no stick left behind, it burns to the very end, very little of the length is wasted. I'd recommend using a ceramic or metal burner since it does burn down to the base. A wooden holder might scorch. This incense does come with a little tiny holder, but it won't catch the ash because its so small. I prefer something with a little less cleanup, but it's nice that it came with it!

A nice little incense.
I was looking online for incense sticks, since I used to burn them frequently in the past and was searching for an alternative/supplement for air fresheners. I found these - my former favorite! - and immediately purchased them. They smell exactly like I remember, with no overpowering smoky/burning smell and a nice, if understated, lavender scent that lingers not overly long after a burn. The one drawback for me with these is their short length (and subsequent short burn time, roughly 20 minutes) and lack of wood at the end that results in burns on the included incense holder and a leftover chunk of scent stick that I've yet to find a use for. This also makes it difficult to insert into what I would consider a "usual" holder, as incense holders are frequently made with a thin wooden end in mind. The included incense holder is very small, as a note, and will not catch any falling ash. Those looking to purchase this item should take that into account - a secondary, larger holder or even a dish or ash tray would suffice to place these on top of to catch ash. Overall, I'm very likely to buy these again as a staple in my collection of scents and sticks!

You do not want to buy this product! I'll tell you why...
I have been buying incense for so long that the Dali Lama calls me before the annual Monk Order for suggestrions. In all these decades I have never encountered an Incense product that was so lacking to have resulted in me returning the product. That streak is over. There are additional flaws to compound the following, but the main reasons why you want to steer clear of this listing are; 1. The sticks are tiny. I don't only mean length (these are some weird mini length sticks I have never seen, but also in girth. On top of being ridiculously short they are also as thin as a typical wooden toothpick. In fact, I have had toothpicks that were much more robust. 2. The ridiculous thinness makes them intensely brittle. If you miss the hole on your first jab you will for sure end up snapping the incense when you reinsert it. This brittleness was the reason that many in my box were snapped in 2-3 pieces upon arrival. 3. There is no exposed stick at all. This is kind of offensive because already they are shipping these very tiny sticks but the lack of said stick means that whatever end you stick in the holder, and whatever the depth of the hole is, you will be placing a not-insignificant chunk in the hole where it can't burn properly since it is not exposed. These weird "toothpicks", very oddly, are covered in burnable area from end to end (under 5 inches and so thinly coated that Karen Carpenter would have insisted on fattening them up. How much could it have cost to leave like a 1/2 inch of wood uncovered and exposed at the end of the stick? a tenth of a penny maybe? What kind of company would face such negative goodwill over the savings of a fraction of a penny? I'm not sure, but this is wayyy beyond a simple mistake or oversight. I'll go out on a limb and say that the fact that none of these physical shortcomings are even hinted at in the description so it smells fishy. Why not honestly include in the listing that these are 4-5 inch sticks and extremely thin? Why be sneaky and list this item without an accurate description? The only reason I can think of is that perhaps they feel they need to do it intentionally because nobody in their right minds would order these sticks if the proper specifications were freely available.. That's why. What these lack in quality and performance is matched only by the sellers apparent willingness to mislead through misinformation and omissions. This utterly craptastic incense is NOT what you think you are ordering. If you order anyway, please return here so I can tell you that "I told you so!" sensitive nose
I'd say I'm somewhere between "It's okay" and "I like it". I think the price is pretty decent - there are pricier Japanese incense out there. While the sticks are smaller and thinner than what most people are probably used to, I think 200 is more than enough if you don't want to kill your nose or have smaller rooms in mind (bedroom or bathroom rather than a whole living/dining room). Personally, this only kind of works for me but I might just not be too much of an incense person. I've tried Whole Foods incense (never again), & World Market cheap stuff (nope). It's all really strong (both in it's flimsy box and in use) and the smoke is terrible. When first trying this, my nose got very irritated. I've had cheap Michael's candles in my windowless room with better results. But I wanted something lavender scented to help me go to sleep. Candle wax smells a little nauseating to me, so I'm very picky about that too. My nose it very sensitive, is what I'm saying. If you *know* you like incense, you'll probably get some enjoyment out of Nippon Kodo. If you're still exploring, like me, maybe not so much. Still air or low fan is preferable. The packaging is pretty nice. It's not as flimsy as most incense packaging and it actually keeps its smell pretty enclosed. Opening it up, the smell is great. But once lit up, I smell smoke for a good while before getting any hint of lavender - or what I think is lavender. I don't have a good comparison anymore and my nose, being really sensitive, just smells that "incense smell" that all incense seems to have. I personally don't think this is as muted as other people have said - it's just smaller. I genuinely wanted something "more subtle". In an effort to do that, I ordered a different Japanese incense: Baieido's Ito En in Green Tea, which is definitely subtle. It is smokeless too, which is great. It's more expensive than Morning Star though, so it's a give or take for me and my sensitive nose. Final note, my purchase came from seller "Daniel's House". fyi The sides of the box should be taped. Packaged well.

No fragrance at all - Smell like a bonfire
I only use Japanese incense sticks, because they do not have a bamboo core and you get a nice fragrance without the burning smell. These were awful. Made the whole house smell like I had lit a bonfire. Used one, and the rest are being returned. Not good.
