Yes, the small rings are inserted into the hole you drill into the lid. Not very reliable and difficult to fit the ring into the hole.

Do I need to drill some holes on the cap to escape the gas?

You don`t need to as there are gaps around the cap.

Can I use it for fermenting pickles?

Yes. It's tell you when the fermentation finished and keep the dust out.You don`t need to clear your jug or mason jar with the airlock.
