can it be used over surface rust ?

Yes! But it’s probably better to wire brush as much rust off if possible. It will stop rust from forming more. I’ve sprayed 4 vehicles with it

Any undercoat gun will work. Use a regulator to fine tune the air pressure

What are the air compressor requirements (e.g Gallons, psi, sfcm) to undercoat a mid size sedan? Will be using woolwax sprayer.

70-90 psi no smaller than 3gallon compressor tank. The smaller the compressor harder the it’ll work to keep up. Hope this helps.

Can this be used on aluminum trailers?

You can apply the surface shield to any surface including aluminum. It's a lanolin based product.
