Are these blades compatible with all recpricating saws?

Yes they are compatible with other saws. I have another saw that is of different make and these blades can be used in that also. You will not be dissappointed.

What size are the blades?

The cutting edge of each blade is 5 inches long.

I read that tpi means "tips per inch," but there is no way that one of them is five eighths of a tip per inch. what does the 5/8 mean?

THE SECOND ANSWER IS CORRECT ("The blade alternates between 5 tpi and 8 tpi. An inch at 5 tpi, then an inch at 8 tpi, ..." BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT BECAUSE THAT BLADE IS NOT EVEN INCLUDED ANYMORE! Instead, this product ships with two of the blades that have 6 teeth per inch. (as of April 2021) ALSO... the claim that a "...and a collapsible ToughCase® or easy storage" is FALSE! There is NO CASE in this set. Good blades, but incorrect product description.

Trying to avoid buying a chain saw. Will this work to cut down some shrubs?

Yes this will work, particularly with a coarse tooth blade. However, for trees and larger shrub cutting, nothing beats a chain saw or a coarse-toothed limb cutting hand saw. And nowadays several companies make small battery powered chain saws that are very lightweight and easy to operate. For smaller shrubs and limbs pruning shears work best.
