Definitely sharpens my axe and hatchet (on a basic level)
I've tested this product to sharpen my Fiskars 18" hatchet and my long Husky brand Axe. For the Husky brand axe, it did it's job--took it from blunt to sharp enough with about 5 minutes of sharpening. Ease of use: 10/10 Go forward, go back. Price point: 10/10 Well worth it for as long as you want your outdoors tools to stay sharp ((enough)) PROBLEMS: Recommendation on sharpening fine sharp tools. Fine sharp tools definition: knives, hatchets, any sharps you need to cut, chop, or slice with ease--passes tomato test. No way this thing can get tomato test level sharp. For that I recommend getting a sharpening stone. I used a 1000 grit for my hatchet because it had chips. I sharpening stone-d the chips away and brought it back to razor sharpness with the stones, not this.

Surprisingly Amazing!
As others have stated this sharpener does look pretty cheaply made when you first see it. BUT it is incredibly effective at its job and the plastic is thicker than it appears at first blush. It put a razor edge on my X7 in a matter of seconds. It took a bit longer on my X27, but not unreasonable considering the shape of the edge. It had been abused recently spliting some seriously hard oak and I'd slipped and accidentally hit the gravel covered ground creating some nasty nicks. This little sharpener took care of it in no time. I also used it on a wrecked kitchen knife that I'd been planning on junking and it even managed to get it back into shape! This thing has the best bang for buck I've ever encountered!

Fiskars 7861 Axe and Knife sharpener - good +
The best way to set a buyer's' expectations is (IMHO) is to address the sales pitch the product carries. Therefore, I'm going to tailor my review accordingly. Here's what the item description claims: >>Knife and axe sharpener sharpens at exact 30-degree angle<< This is true - assuming the user doesn't force it laterally (which is entirely possible) to change said angle. Follow the instructions, and we should all be good on this one. >>Patented ceramic wheel for effective sharpening<< Patent, schmatent. It's the same darned sharpening device available from any reputable manufacturer. I've seen better / I've seen worse. >>Built-in hand guard<< Uh-huh. This so-called "hand guard" is that little plastic lip you see in the photo about 75% of the way from the non-business end of the device. >>Non-slip feet for additional safety<< Yeah right. Maybe for small steak knives. Try running a splitting maul through this thing, and see how well those non-slip feet work. >>Lifetime warranty<< Common ambiguity. This refers, of course, to the lifetime of the *product*, not the user. Probably common sense, but worth noting. The bottom line: This actually does sharpen both knives and heavier equipment. I've done a full set of steak knives, a butcher's block full of blades, and a couple of hatchets and axes. Does it work? Yes. BUT... 1. This item is very lightweight. You may find this to be a bonus, but it literally flexes as you pull your blades through it. The body is hollow (which isn't shown in the photos), so those "non-slip" feet they mention are pretty much inconsequential. 2. Other reviewers have noted this, and it's kind of important: Dragging a blade through this device will actually start carving through the plastic base below the angled stones. As long as the spindle that holds the wheels holds up, this shouldn't be a big deal (until you pull a large axe through it, and the whole thing snaps in two). So far, I've had the fortune of it withstanding some admittedly-impatient (ab)use. :) 3. It's a nine dollar item. If you have high hopes for this being the ultimate sharpening device for all your household and yard maintenance tools, rethink the likelihood of that being the case. I've had great luck with this item so far, but I think a more realistic expectation of its efficacy and product build should be expressed. I hope this helps in doing so! P.S. Note that I gave it a 4/5 rating!

A Good Product Use Carefully
Appears durable, the plastic is very solid. It's a good shade of black, premium appearance. When sharpening, this sharpener is very stable. Made in a way that is very easy and steady to grip, but also very light too. Do not sharpen kitchen knives with it. I put two different knives through it and both came out with dings, a kind of missing spot in the blade that was not there before. A real shame... [He is the originator of love, and it is an enduring attribute of His nature.] 1 John 4:8 AMP For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Very flimsy and the guide falls off mine
I got it earlier this week and have been using it to sharpen a new hatchet and axe I picked up. Neither is sharpening very well, certainly not as well as I have done with other hatchets on the $3 carbide knife sharpener I keep in the camping box. That said, the blades on each have never been given a good edge, so it could be I just need to put in some more time and possibly need to hit them with a file first. However, the sharpener itself keeps popping open and the guide keeps falling off. The whole sharpener is very flimsy and I feel like I'm going to crush it / break the plastic whenever I try to grip it and run it across the blade. I may be returning this. Added 11/24/14 I took my axe to a belt sander to better shape the blade. Imagine the surprise of my wife and youngest son (and possibly a few neighbors) as they pulled into the driveway and saw me sharpening an axe ;-) Once the blade was starting to get sharp, this sharpener worked much better at getting a nice edge. Unfortunately, the entire sharpener is still light weight / flimsy plastic and feels like I'll break it each time I slide it across the blade. The plastic guide continued to pop off. I stand by my three star rating, but it's moved from a 2.5 star to a solid three, since it actually does work.

Horrible packaging, cheap plastic and product missing parts
I ordered one of these sharpeners this week. It arrived in packaging that looked like it had been torn apart and pieced back together. The only thing holding the sharpener to the packaging was a very loose zip tie. It was also missing one of the small rubber nubs on the bottom that held it in place. It appeared like it had been sold, used and returned before being sent out to me as a new item. After a replacement was ordered and sent, the second one was in even worse condition. This package was also all torn up. The two part cardboard that holds the item in place was completely torn apart and held together (barely) with a couple of staples. This replacement sharpener was missing two of the three rubber nubs that keep it from sliding around as you sharpen an item. It is a very cheap lightweight piece of plastic and does not look very durable. Especially considering it is “designed” to sharpen an axe or hatchet. While the sharpener appears to function ok for a cheap sharpener, one misstep with an axe and it is likely to slice right through the cheap plastic. And a drop would probably shatter it. Without the rubber nubs, it is also difficult to hold steady while trying to sharpen an axe or even a hatchet. Don’t waste your money on this cheaply made and packaged piece of plastic.

Does the job
For such an inexpensive device, it's quite effective. I got it primarily for my Fiskars splitting axe (works very well) but also works very nicely for knives of different sizes. Pleasantly surprised, actually, given some of the negative reviews. It is lightweight (a plus in my book), so you have to kind of lean on it when using with larger items like an axe, but does the job a lot easier than trying to get the edge perfect with a file!

I still don't understand why this thing works but it does.
I use this for kitchen knives only so axe sharpening is not what I am reviewing. This thing is one of the few exceptions to the "You get what you pay for" rule. It looks kind of cheap, doesn't look like it should work and is just to simple a process to be believed. Run a dull knife through this thing a few times and it is unbelievable sharp. I use this in a commercial kitchen and it's lasted months. So impressed by this I've purchased a few more as accompanying gifts when I give expensive knives for the holidays. For someone who doesn't know how to use a whetstone much less a honing rod this thing is great. For someone who is quite adept at using whetstones this thing is still fantastic. Not quite as good an edge as I can get myself but in 5 seconds it equals about 10 minutes on a stone.

poor quality
disapointing flimsy plastic feel...sharpens okay but no as good as other sharpeners that are available on the market.

Buena compra.

Rather spend more on Fiskar's X-sharpe range of sharpeners
Not very well made, does not perform as it is expected from Fiskar product- Cannot be use to sharpen Axe's and other garden tools that require sharpening.
