I got the Y401 gas leak detector as I am living in an older rental home with a questionable gas heater. Occasionally I think I am smelling gas and have the gas company checked it out but nothing. I saw this as a best buy and at a good price point. AFTER reading the instructions I mounted it near the ceiling, as recommend AND waited the three minutes for it to warm up, no gas. I feel much more comfortable knowing I am monitoring my own gas leaks and have extra warning if something happens. I am also so glad that, for once, I read the instructions! This unit has two different mounting points depending upon the type of gas used, I didn't know this, and when first plugged in it shows an error code. Both these are explained in the directions. This is a good looking unit, it works on an electrical circuit, no batteries. I would definitely buy it again, Since so many, like me, often skip instructions, I do wish the manufacturer would include a quick start guide with the basic placement information as well as the warm-up, starting instructions on a separate card, it would possibly make some new users much happier and get best use.

Final update... I've been using the firmware updated replacement a few months now. It works really well. There was only one instance where I unplugged it to adjust to a significant and fast environment change. It reset and all is good! ....,........... They gave a full refund and shipped an updated new replacement! There has been a software update to make it not react to rapid temperature and humidity changes. The replacement has been working perfectly now. The seller responded that the issue is due to temperature and humidity changes which cause the reading to "drift". They have updated the software for this gas detector. They sent an updated model to try. They also gave a full refund without my asking. ................. Problem Solved! The Techamor y401 gave us false readings every day. The problems began when it was only a few weeks old, I ordered it in January. It read a constant 1-3, on occasion and it went up to 4-5 and triggered the alarm! It would sometimes read a 0, but only on occasion. I moved it to many different locations indoors and out, and had the same result. It was so erratic that I couldn't trust it. I unplugged it and ordered a real Gas leak detector like plumbers use in order to verify what was happening. The new gas detector is handheld and extremely sensitive, detecting as little as 50 parts per million! I took the new gas detector around the house, to every gas appliance (and every drain opening in case methane was coming up through the plumbing). I did this repeatedly over a period of days and it never detected a gas leak!! I tested the hand held gas detector with both propane and natural gas. It reacted correctly and once the alarm sounded and I turned off the gas, the meter showed lowering gas levels until it returned to it's baseline. I detected both gases before I could smell them! It never once provided a false reading. But it's not practical for 24/7 monitoring. Then I plugged the Techamor y401 back in, and compared it to the professional gas detector. The Techamor again showed gas when there was none. It's junk. Had I trusted the Techamor and called the fire department when the alarm sounded, it would have been embarrassing, and scared my condo neighbors! And wasted the Fire Department's resources. Without an accurate and sensitive device to compare, I question so many reviews that say it's accurate! How do so many reviewers have a way of knowing. Yes, it did sound the alarm when I tested it with propane and natural gas. However, it went off several times when there was zero gas in the air. It went off when we used the toaster oven! And when I was washing dishes! How can you trust it to do one thing when it doesn't do the other correctly? I prefer a plug in detector that provides a constant readout in order to detect when a gas burner is inadvertently bumped on! Now, I don't know what to trust! I don't know if this is typical for the Techamor y401, or if it's defective.

I love that the alarm tone volume is moderate and not ear-damaging, but at the same time, it would not wake you up if you were in a different room.
