This is an extremely difficult game. It makes Souls games look like easy Kirby games in comparison.
The other review at this time that I can see about the Playstation 5 version of Rims Racing says that they are just always crashing. I would like to validate that review in saying that's actually a very accurate statement about Rims Racing. Even in it's "easy" mode, this game was extremely over the top difficult, it's extremely hard. This game makes difficult Souls games like Sekiro look like easy Kirby games in comparison. With that said, I did enjoy the game enough to give it a 4 star rating. 4 out of 5 stars means I enjoy the game and I do think it's a good game. HOWEVER, I will confess that when I started playing this game I was ready to give this game a one star rating since the game was extremely vicious with it's difficulty as my bike would repeatedly crash and crash and crash and my biker would be catapulted up into the air like a rag doll after being thrown from a bike that had crashed into a concrete wall. LOL. However, after playing some more, I'm now giving this game a 4 star rating. Now I am enjoying this game. Long story short, this game is absurdly difficult. However, as of right now I've become far more comfortable playing this game and I'm placing in first place in all my races and winning everything. HOWEVER... it took me 12 hours of getting destroyed in this game.... crashing into guard rails, crashing into trees, crashing into other bikers, crashing into someone else who was crashing into another biker who was viciously falling off his bike and crashing onto the ground head first, etc, before I could become comfortable enough and start winning races and getting into first place every time. I also had to restart the career mode and start fresh due to the horrible record I had. With that said, there are three groups of people who might adore this game: 1) Extremely hardcore motorcycle enthusiasts who can handle extremely difficult motorbike racing sims (NOTE: this is not an arcade style racing game, this is an extremely pure racing sim). It should be noted that in a video review I saw on a well known streaming website (which I saw AFTER I bought the game and only because I was wondering if anyone else was having as much of a hard time with this game as I was) the video reviewer, who had played Ride 4 (another bike simulation racing game which has a reputation for also being an extremely difficult game) was saying he found Rims Racing to be even harder and called Rims Racing the "Dark Souls" of racing games. Ride 4, despite being a very hard game, at least takes pity on you and gives you a rewind button to correct your mistakes. But what about Rims Racing? There is no rewind button in Rims Racing. You crash... you CRASH while Rims Racing gives you a metaphorical dirty look while pointing an index finger at you and laughing at you. LMAO. With that said, I decide that I wanted Rims racing and NOT Ride 4 since there is a really unique bike mechanic simulator mode exclusive to Rims (You can actually make Rims Racing a little easier while being a mechanic on your own bike and customizing the breaks, which is helping me win first place in every race now). Also, Rims Racing feels more alive as it has actual people in the stands and around the race course cheering you on in very animated ways (granted, I don't like it when I crash into a wall and they are clapping and cheering at my pain. LOL). Ride 4 has empty arenas with no people from video footage I have seen. 2) Extremely stubborn people like myself who will get angry at a hard game and will try to master it. This was my very first motorcycle racing sim. I have played tons of other racing games before (including arcade style motorcycle racing games like all three games in Sega's Hang-On trilogy (Hang-On in arcades and the Sega Master System, Super Hang-On on Sega Genesis, and Hang-On GP on Sega Saturn), the vast majority of the games in the Road Rash series of games, especially Road Rash on 3DO, current gen motorcycle arcade style racing games like Super Night Riders, etc. I've also played car simulation racing games like the Gran Turismo series on Playstation consoles and other types of racing games like the Forza Horizon series on Xbox consoles and PC, the Cruisin series, Mario Kart series on Nintendo consoles, I've even played Atari Karts on an Atari Jaguar. LOL. With that said, all of these games are extremely easy in comparison to Rims Racing, which is operating on extreme nightmare difficulty at times). I paid money for Rims Racing, I started playing, and I started getting annihilated. Again, it took me about 12 hours before I started becoming comfortable with the game and eventually winning in first place in all my races. MOST people don't have the patience for that (I think most people would have raged quit after the first 15 minutes of crashing. LOL). 3) The third group of people who this game might appeal to are people who enjoy playing extremely hard games in general (Rims racing is so hard it will make Elden Ring experts go cry in a corner. LOL). To give you an idea of how difficult his game is, when I completed the first 5 courses out of 70 (and completing those 5 courses was NOT easy, especially the manufactures challenge course which was extremely difficult, despite me placing in 1st place) I received a trophy for completing the first 5 courses out of 70. When I went to check the statistics of how many players received that trophy it said that only 31% of players had gotten past the first 5 courses. Let that sink in for a second. Only 31% of the people who played this game were able to get past the first five courses. 5 out of 70 courses is the beginning of the game. And I will admit that I was extremely struggling to win the manufactures course (the only thing that saved me was that I picked the Kawasaki version of that course and that version is SLIGHTLY "easier" than the others and allows you to race with the cool Kawasaki green ninja motorbike. If it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't have gotten past that point. The other options were much worse, especially the course where there was tons of rain, making everything slippery and even easier to crash). Also, when I reached course # 15 out of 70 (which is the first part out of seven parts of the Rims Racing championship tournament) and won first place, I received a trophy stating only 16% of players had reached that point. So now you might be wondering how many people have completed the game? How many people have won the Rims Racing championship? 2%... yes... TWO PERCENT. Only 2% of people who have played this have actually managed to beat the game and win the championship, according to the trophy list. This is an absurdly low number. While most people don't even finish their easiest games due to getting involved with other things, the normal completion rate for most games is typically about 30% to 40% on average if you look at most game's trophy lists. This game has a completion rate of 2% among it's players. Do keep that in mind. Most people aren't going to have the skill to beat this game. Also, if you go into this game thinking "Hey, I've beaten super hard games like Sekiro, Bloodborne, Elden Ring, etc, with ease, this game should be a cake walk", you will fail. Rims Racing doesn't care if you are a Sekiro master, it will eat you up and spit you out. If you are a veteran of car sim racing like Gran Turismo and are thinking that since you are a king at that game you can come into Rims Racing and beat it with ease, you are wrong. Rims Racing doesn't care of you are the king of all Gran Turismo games, it will eat you up and spit you against a wall as you crash. Car racing sims are not the same as motorbike racing sims, especially Rims Racing. If you are a veteran of classic arcade style motorbike racing games like Hang-On, Road Rash, etc, and even a veteran of newer arcade style motorbike racing games like Super Night Riders and you are a king in one of those games and you come to Rims Racing thinking you will defeat it easily, you will be very wrong. Rims Racing is a simulation racing game, it's not arcade style. Rims racing will eat you alive and feed you to an alligator. If you are a Mario Kart racing champion... don't even think about playing this game, you will have zero chance. You are the king of Forza Horizon games? This game will destroy you, that's how extremely hard this game is. Are you the king of classic shooters like Gradius, R-Type, Darius, and other games like that? Rims Racing is much harder. Much, much harder. Even if you have been playing video games since the 70's or 80's and you can play NES games like Ninja Gaiden, Ghosts & Goblins, etc, blind folded with ease, Rims Racing doesn't care. Rims racing will make your NES Ghosts & Goblins game look like Color a Dinosaur or a Sesame Street game in comparison while it eats you alive. Neo Geo SNK boss syndrome? Rims Racing is worst... much worst when it comes to difficulty. It's harder. Severely harder. You have been warned about this game's absurd difficulty. And with that, while I severely hated this game at first, I now love it... even if it still makes me angry for several reasons (some of which I'll mention in this review). I strongly suggest playing on "easy" mode (which isn't really easy, it's still absurdly hard) since that will give you the option to restart a race if you mess up (the higher difficulties won't let you restart races). Also, set physics to beginner because anything higher than that and you will see your rider flying off that bike and into a wall. Also, combining the break button into one instead of front and rear separate break buttons is a very good idea as well. Also, if you decide to download the 3 GB update to this game, it should be noted that the update makes the game even harder. Seriously, someone thought it was a good idea to make an already highly difficult game harder. The update makes the other bikers even more competent than they were, meaning that they are going to be speeding past you even more now. You might want to strongly consider NOT updating this game. You have been warned. After I updated and noticed that the other bikers were even more nightmarish than before I checked online to see the notes of the update and read on one website that they actually made the other bikers even harder. WHY would they do that?!? That just makes the game near impossible!! Anyway, do NOT do the update so you actually have a chance at winning in this game. In the event you are reading this and you already updated and you are being destroyed in this game, be warned: if you try to uninstall and reinstall so you can play a NON-updated version of this game from your disc, your save file won't work anymore and you will have to restart from scratch. You will have to go to your console's settings and erase your original save file so you can restart the game. This happened to me. Granted, I didn't mind since my win / loss record was so horrible I needed to restart from scratch anyway. NOTE: when installing from the disc, keep your Playstation 5 offline and insert the disc so it installs directly off the disc (that way it won't try to download the update). Also, if reinstalling, erase the original install first, then eject the disc, erase your save file since you will be forced to start over, shut off your console, turn the console back on and put the disc back in the console and then reinstall off the disc OFFLINE to avoid any install problems. If you accidentally start the game while online and the game tries to download the update, after you check off "start game without updating", go to your download manager immediately and make sure the update is stopped because sometimes it will try to start downloading anyway. Just erase the update). HOWEVER, if you are interested in the multiplayer and / or the DLC, I would suggest finishing the single player first (all 70 courses). After that, then update the game so you will be allowed to play the multiplayer and get the DLC (you will be very well trained at racing in this game by then, a total expert. That's what I plan on doing in the future). As difficult as the game was during the first five courses, the game gets even harder after that. The first part of the European circuit (which I think was course # 7) is absurd. There is one part in particular which is an "S" style curve where if you go off the road during that curve a few times too many you will get the dreaded "Lap Invalidated" announcement (which really screws over your race). This isn't a big deal on the practice and qualifying races, but when you start racing for real if you don't stay on the road and keep going into the grass during that "S" curve the judges will deduct huge points from you. Meaning: even if you do end up in first place because you outraced all the other bikers, because of the point deductions (which is them saying that some of your laps were invalidated) you will get punished so badly that after you see you came in first place after the race is over you will get your first place win taken away from you by the judges and given a last place 10th place standing and you won't be able to repeat that race so you will permanently have lost that race and be in a last place standing for that race. This is horrible because the game takes all wins into account and if your total win average isn't up to their standards, you will NOT be allowed to participate in the first part (out of seven) of the Rims championship match that happens around course # 15, so now you better make sure you win all your other races (or at least come in at the top three, but you better have at least a few first place standings in future courses) to counter that last place standing in that one course. Important note: when faced with annoying "S" curves and other highly dangerous parts of a course, it's best to slow down at a snails pace and just take things SLOW but smooth. Even if another biker passes you while doing this, once the curve ends you can speed back up and eventually race pass them and regain first place. In other words, sometimes it's best to race like a slow but smooth turtle in this game before speeding back up and become a super fast hare. Even if you are way behind in your first few laps because you move super slow but smooth at some parts, you will eventually catch up and get into first place. Sometimes it's best to be a smooth moving turtle. While the game will occasionally throw an "easy" "filler" course that's only 10 minutes each at most at you between the more serious courses (those tend to run 30 minutes long each... but will take most people about 2 to 3 hours each to complete. I'll explain why later), the more serious courses get far more harder and harder as you progress. This is absurd since the game was already hard to begin with. Again, this is on "easy" mode. I ended up nicknaming this game "Kamikaze Road Rash" after a while. LMAO. In the PRE-Update version of the game, there are times where the other bikers will do an unintentional Kamikaze attack upon you (or maybe it's intentional? LMAO. I have a rival in the game named Tiegan Sawyer and she doesn't seem to like my character at all. LOL) and will crash right into you, which will cause you to crash into a wall. You won't be able to get out of the way either, it happens at lightning speed. You can be racing along minding your own business and then... BAM... some other biker comes out of nowhere at warp speed crashing right into you, sending your biker literally flying over a cliff to his doom. LOL. Why Tiegan... why?!? LMAO. Even in the POST-Update version of the game, while that doesn't happen as often (mainly because the bikers are more spaced apart) it still occasionally happens when you least expect it, but now it's worse because trying to catch up to the other bikes in the POST-update version of the game is almost impossible at most times due to the update making the other bikers even more competent than they already were (again, I would avoid the update if I were you. Don't download it and keep the game offline entirely. You can make your Playstation 5 go offline in the system's settings). On the "easy" mode, you do get a player assist thing on the road where green means you have to speed up and yellow and red mean you have to hit the break and slow down. While this does help greatly while racing I've noticed that it's not always accurate. For example, on the 2nd Kawasaki course (I think that was course # 8 or # 9) there were many times where I had to break even on green or else I would find myself flying off into a wall. In other words, it's not something you can 100% rely on. However, it is incredibly nice to have and helps make the game actually playable and I'm happy that the developers included it. HUGE TWO THUMBS UP for including this. Also, This is an extremely long game. While one website says that this game is only 10 hours long for it's career, that's not true at all. I'm on course # 19 (out of 70) and I have 18 hours of play time on record for Rims Racing. It should be strongly noted that I had to restart several races SEVERAL times due to me crashing into walls way too many times and noticing that I had no chance to catch up to the other bikers. It's extremely easy to crash in this game. It normally takes 30 minutes to finish each of the more serious courses (10 minutes for the mandatory practice run, 10 minutes for the mandatory qualifying run, and 10 minutes for the actual real race), but those 30 minute courses can easily turn into 2 or 3 hours of play time due to the amount of times you might have to restart the race due to something going wrong and you wanting to win first place). Two other things I liked about this game were 1) The music (whoever was in charge of picking the music for this game did a great job. I LOVE the music) and 2) I did like the mechanics you have to do to fix your bike. Granted, this is also a double edge sword. As you are racing, your bike's parts are going to start to get damaged (crash enough times and your bike will get wrecked during a race. This is extremely dangerous as your bike can become an total wreck during a race if you crash too many times. Imagine if you were playing a Souls game where if you get hit enough times, your left leg breaks, your right shoulder dislocates from it's socket, and your left hand is broken. An already hard game just got infinitely much harder due to the injuries to your character during a level. That's basically what happens in Rims Racing to your bike if you start crashing like crazy. Damage your bike enough and the game is going to get harder as you are trying to race on a heavily damaged bike. Granted, your bike can survive a little more punishment on the "easy" difficulty. Anyway, when your bike gets damaged (and it will get damaged) after the race is over you take it back to your garage and you now have to buy new parts and replace everything yourself. The game becomes a bike repair / mechanic simulator. The bike mechanic simulator is one of the unique things this game has that no other simulation motorbike racing game has and I love it. It's very detailed and you can get very immersed and involved fixing and customizing your bike in this mode. I had a Suzuki GSX-R1000R motorbike and I customized it so it had the BEST breaking possible (which made the game a little easier for me). Just becareful when spending money on parts because if you mismanage your in-game money (that you get by winning races) you can find yourself in a VERY bad situation. Also, just to warn you, when racing in rain, make sure you have wheels that are specifically designed for rain equipped on your bike. Anyway, I'm giving this game a 4 out of 5 stars. I do enjoy the game despite my numerous critiques. Also, the haptic feedback for this game is cool.

Gran Tourismo for bikes. I absolutely love it.
If you have experience with Gran Tourismo, this sim will feel very familiar, quickly. Customize your avatar, buy, win and upgrade bikes, choose from multiple tracks, participate in challenges, earn licenses, develope and manage your career and season. It's all there. The physics are different for different bikes, mods and upgrades make a difference and the graphics are really nice. It plays smoothly and has a bit of a learning curve which doesn't let it get stale too quickly. My son and I have been putting in hours upon hours and we are still hungry to play. We bought 4 motorcycle Sims for 2 different platforms, at the same time and while they are all good, we both feel that this is the best balance of engaging / challenging and playable. You can do the arcade style play and you can go full "technical" if that is your thing. There is a lot of playing field in-between as well. We are loving it. It is money well spent for us. We HIGHLY recommend it.
