The Intrepid Knight with his 4 wheeled Best Friend
The Knight always ready to defend the widow and the orphan ! This Adage seems to have somewhat disappeared from our modern lives. For this reason , Knight Rider remains an absolute Must-Have for any film collection . His superb four-wheeled , K.I.T.T. , awaits us impatiently , engine roaring around corners of CALIFORNIA .

This review pertains to the 4K UHD complete series set
"Knight Rider" aired on NBC from September 26, 1982, to April 4, 1986 consisting of 90 episodes over the course of 4 seasons. I was 7 years old when it originally debuted back in 1982 and it along with The A-Team were my favorite television shows for about 3 years. The show is most definitely a product of its time but I still find to be a lot of nostalgic fun that is still entertaining decades later. In terms of blu-ray releases of the series, Japan got a nice complete series blu-ray set on November 27, 2014. This was followed by a North American complete series budget blu-ray release by Mill Creek Entertainment on October 4, 2016, which is what I had previously owned prior to the 4K UHD set released by Universal on July 22, 2025 which I upgraded to from the 2016 Mill Creek bluray set. German boutique label Turbine released a lavish collector's edition blu-ray box of the entire series on December 30, 2022 followed by a slimmed down standard version on November 10, 2023. Regarding Universal's complete series 4K UHD set, it is a 21 disc set consisting of 20 4K UHD discs and a standard bluray disc that contains an excellent little over an hour long new restrospective documentary on the series. The 4K UHD release was controversial due to Universal's decision to cram up to four and a half hours of content on a single 4K disc resulting in bit rates that hover between the low and upper 40's for the most part occasionally spiking into the upper 60's and low 70's depending on the scene. (Some notable sites like The Digital Bits erroneously claimed that the bit rates on this 4K set never escaped the 40's.) This decision resulted in some compression artifacts being visible normally in the form of how the film grain is resolved being that this show was shot on 35mm film stock in a full frame aspect ratio which is how the show is presented here. The other issues is that with the exception of the double length pilot episode, the rest of the 2 hour event episodes are presented in their 2-part syndicated versions rather than the original full length broadcast versions. I am not sure why Universal when working on their 4K restorations from the original camera negatives would restore/scan the 2-part syndicated versions of the 2 hour event episodes rather than the original broadcast versions. Lastly is that there is still a handful of missing songs throughout the series due rights issues as well as season 4 being presented in mono when it originally aired in stereo (the first 3 seasons aired in mono). The Turbine German bluray release is notable in that to date it is the only release featuring all of the original uncut broadcast versions of the series along with all original music having been restored. The Turbine release also presents season 4 in stereo rather than mono in the case of the Univeral 4K UHD release. As a result of the issues I mentioned about the Universal 4K UHD release, a lot of people wrote this release off as compromised which I can't argue as this set should have been perfect. Despite the compression issues resulting from so much content being put on each disc resulting in lower than expected bit rates for the most part, I still found the 4K UHD release to be a massive night and day difference compared to the budget Mill Creek bluray release. I cannot compare it to the Turbine bluray set as I did not purchase the German release due to how pricey it was. I do know the Turbine release is a 20 disc set so it makes me wonder how the bit rates are as a result on the German bluray release in comparison to Univeral's 4K UHD set which also contains all 4 seasons on 20 4K UHD discs. The biggest reason to purchase to 4K UHD complete series set from Universal is due to the inclusion of HDR10 which makes the show simply come alive like it never has prior. The HDR grading it tasteful but really makes colors pop while also delivering inky blacks with no crush visible. Skintones also look natural and perfect to my eyes. Regarding the visible compression issues, I still found most episodes looked fine to my eyes, occasionally amazing, though eagle eyed viewers will notice the film grain to clump up and look noisy in several shots hurting fine detail as a result. For the most part, I was still impressed at how this film looks in 4K UHD despite the issues present. If you are like me and upgrading from the Mill Creek bluray set, prepare to be greatly impressed with how significantly better the show looks in 4K UHD with HDR10 which makes the Mill Creek bluray set look like DVD upscales in comparison. For the most part, if you just set back and enjoy the 4K UHD set for what it is rather than focusing in on the compression issues, it still can manage to impress. It is truly like seeing the series all over again for the first time. Sound is presented in lossless mono for all 4 seasons which is slightly odd being that season 4 originally aired in stereo. I thought the audio sounded clean, clear and well defined throughout. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired. Special features are as follows: Season One - Disc One: - Knight of the Phoenix parts 1 & 2 Audio Commentary featuring David Hasselhoff and Glen Larson Season One - Disc Five: - Knight Moves (SD 6:07) - Knight Sounds (SD 6:37) - Knight Rider: Under the Hood (SD 15:51) - Photo Gallery - Blueprints Gallery Season Three Disc Five: - The Great โ80s TV Flashback (SD 29:01) Season Four - Disc Five: - Knight Rider 2000 (SD 1:34:44) Bonus Disc: - Knight Rider: Behind the Wheel (HD 1:01:00) Overall, this 4K UHD is a bit of a disappointment as it clearly shows that Universal took some unfortunate short cuts that seem to be a bit of laziness in terms of the presentation of the series. On the other hand, the show still looks quite excellent in 4K UHD despite the compression issues thanks to the inclusion of HDR10. The new hour long documentary is nice however some additional commentary tracks and interviews with the cast and crew would have been the icing on the cake. If you are upgrading from the Mill Creek bluray set, then this 4K UHD release is a no brainer. However if you are upgrading from the Turbine bluray set, it is a bit more of a tougher sell. I still find the 4K UHD set to be recommended warts and all. The show has never looked better thanks to HDR10 even though it could have looked even more impressive with higher bit rates afforded by the episodes bring spread over 3 or 4 more 4K discs.
