Can disks get scratched?

There is nothing in the case that will scratch the discs. I placed most of my DVD in it for storage. Works great.

Is the "red" more of a "purple" in actual color, or somewhere in between?

Correct, it's not a true red and more purple in color than red.

What material is the outside of the case made of? Is it a fabric that I could iron designs onto?

I believe that you could iron designs on the case as long as they didn't require a very hot iron. However, these cases might get a lot of handling and I would wonder upon the possibility of them possibly coming loose over time.
