Do you need to put it in the washing machine after you use it?

Yes I did, however it did not come out looking brand new. I had to readjust the sponge a little and pull it back into shape again, but it was still quite useful. I suppose if I had cleaned it in a gentle cycle with like items it would have faired better, but who cares, nothing lasts forever! To end, this is the ONLY body scrubber I will use, so longevity is unimportant. Happy  trails!
