Great for Travelers, Limited for Planners
The Airbnb eGift Card is perfect if you love spontaneous getaways. I used mine toward a cozy cabin weekend, and it felt great to offset the cost. The flexibility across stays and experiences is a strong selling point. However, it’s less ideal for people who plan months ahead, since prices fluctuate and cleaning fees can eat into the value fast. You also can’t use it for long-term reservations or certain taxes depending on location. Still, for gifting or treating yourself to a quick trip, it’s fun and practical.

Don’t Do It-
Airbnb will gladly take your cash, allowing you to buy their gift cards only to find reasons that you are not allowed to apply your gift card (either whole or in part) to your purchase. Basically they take all of your money then turn around and charge your credit card instead of using the gift card balance. In the small print, Airbnb says gift cards can be used same as cash. Only after you make the reservation do you then find out they can change the rules (meaning of ‘same as cash’) anytime they want and basically make them up. The rule is they take your money and then refuse to allow you to apply the money they have of yours on hand while they dip into your credit card account. Only if you carefully scroll through all of their terms do you find at the very very bottom a blurb about when and how you may pay for your stay using your ‘gift card’. It appears to be deliberately worded in such a vague way that nobody can quite understand just what they are getting at….and after all, they themselves state that your Airbnb gift card can be used just the same as cash, verbatim. Airbnb’s definition of cash, just as their definition of what a gift card is, appears to be not only different from what one might find in a dictionary but radically different from what the rest of the world understands these terms to mean. There is no recourse and all they say is that ‘we are sorry you’re disappointed with your experience’. If you want to be ripped off, go ahead and buy their card otherwise pay cash upfront by using your credit card and never buy their gift cards. I’m not sure how they can legally get away with this behavior. If you go to their website, you will find there are a lot of people that are very unhappy, or ahem, ‘ disappointed with their experience’. This forces the gift card holder to make another reservation/stay in the future in order to use their ‘gift card’ balance for forfeit it. It is a way for them to keep part of your funds (interest free mind you) and to force you to stay again in the future. They read replies from a script to your concerns. Basically their attitude seems to be, ‘ if you do’t like it call the police’. The only recourse available to unhappy customers is to leave feedback detailing their disturbing experience(s), and their gross lack of customer care and assistance (bordering on contemptuous) on the site where they happened to purchase their gift card. The site(s) selling the gift cards are not at fault. The fault does not lie with the vendors of the GC’s but rather Airbnb itself. This has been a long standing irritation for years now as evidenced by many a negative FB easily found with a quick online search engine. They should have straightened out the matter long before now. The fact they have not corrected it demonstrates that they have no plans which to do so. Airbnb started out to be a great thing, but it didn’t take long for greed and mismanagement to run it into the ground. It was great while it lasted but it is over.
