Is this device is the same as "pcan-usb" ?

100% is a real PCAN-USB. I too was skeptical. But it’s just the sellers description and writing. They also sell the other version pcan-usb-iso and is correctly advertised/described. I’m happy and it is working well.

Could it be used to simulate ecu behavior?

Hi. This is the Hardware Interface. So if you have a ECU Simulator or program that generates similar ECU CAN messages, Then yes it can do the job.

I used this device for getting the CAN data from my Car. Its working so well and I can see all the data and responses of peddle, accelerator reflected live in PCAN viewer. Gridconnect has extremely good support . One good part is they have provided the C++ APIs which I am yet to explore for acquiring CAN data from my vehicle. I am planning to use it for developing a Instrument cluster by acquiring vehicle data.
