I purchased this Spyderco Ladybug with the hopes of having a small, lightweight, and fully functional EDC (Every Day Carry) blade. Let me tell you...it does not disappoint and gave me exactly what I wanted! Here are the specs: #1) VG-10 blade steel #2) Foliage Green FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) handles with Spyderco's Volcano Grip which offers excellent slip resistance and feel #3) Open length of: 4.375" inches or 111mm...Length closed is 2.438" inches or 62mm...Blade thickness is: 0.78" inches or 2mm...Blade length is: 1.938" or 49mm...Cutting edge is: 1.687" inches or 43mm...and the weight of this knife is a beautiful: .06 oz or 18g.....*Please Note* (These specs are taken directly from Spyderco's website itself, so they are accurate and true) #4) Adjustable Torx pivot screw for blade retention adjustments #5) Torx screw in handle for blade removal or cleaning Pros: Arrived shaving sharp VG-10 steel Excellent Grip Extremely lightweight (I'm carrying it in my pocket as I write this!) Conceals very well Smooth opening plain edge knife The Spyderhole IS usable despite it's small size Wonderful color: It is a foliage green that is used in the U.S. Army's camo design and it actually does "shade shift" as Spyderco proclaims...against a gray background the knife seems to shift to a gray color, but against a darker green background it appears to turn a dark earthy foliage green. Solid lockback lockup Lanyard hole for paracord or any other lanyards! Addjustable Torx screws for the blade retention and removal and or cleaning applications! HUGE PLUS!!! That is one of the big reasons I bought it! It's so little and still adjustable to your liking! Cons: I personally have none for the knife, however these are something's to keep in mind that others have mentioned: #1) I have medium sized hands and if you have larger hands it may be difficult to get a good grip on to open it as it is small, but it's not impossible, it may just take some getting use to. #2) The SpyderHole is small. It IS fully functional and can be open one-handed....however with bigger or gloved hands, it may take some getting use to as well. #3) No pocket clip: This may be an issue to some, as you cannot clip it to you pants or a pocket, but I find it to be for the better. I like to slip this knife in the coin pocket in my jeans and it's not even noticeable, or when I go to the gym, it slips effortlessly into some loose shorts; It only has a lanyard hole as mentioned earlier. (***If you want a small knife such as this one WITH a pocket clip check out the Spyderco Dragonfly***) #4) It is a lockback blade, so anybody living in a restricted area or under specific regulations such as the UK may have to check with local laws. However, Spyderco makes wonderful choices for UK or restricted knife law areas residents, such as the UK Penknife or any of the "Bug" series knives. #4) Not made in the U.S.A.: This may bother some folks as some people like to buy "American only" made items. The Ladybug is made in Seki-City Japan and has fantastic quality control backing it...I mean hey, Spyderco's founder Sal Glesser carries one...it's got to be good! #5) Some have mentioned that the name "LadyBug" is an embarrassing title to carry around with you....if it is a problem then Spyderco also makes the "ManBug", however I think this statement is just silly, it's a tool and hey if it works good, what does the name have to do with anything??? But it may rise some issues with some folks. All in all I personally think Spyderco hit the nail on the head with this knife. It's small sure!, but don't let it deter you. You have to use it within it's limits. It is a small knife with big cutting power, but trying to split logs or cut thru mooring lines probably won't work to well. It's an invaluable tool I carry on me everyday and I find at least 1 use for it everyday! Pair it with a small Streamlight Microstream, a Zippo, and a small multi tool, and you have a beautiful EDC setup! Whether it be cleaning your fingernails, to cutting a pesky loose string off your clothes, or to opening a package, this little Ladybug has you covered! I fully recommend picking one up if you need a lightweight, razor sharp, go anywhere knife that won't let you down and gives you more capabilities than one could think! Put it on a lanyard, toss it in a pocket, put it on a chain and wear it, or put it on a keyring, nobody should leave home without a LadyBug on their person! The spyderco ladybug is a small lockback that's extremely light yet durable. I had one previously on a Keychain and used it daily for about 5 years, the edge was still relatively sharp and the glass filled handle was untouched. Unfortunately I got a magnet quick release attachment (big mistake) and lost it. The ladybug is one of the lightest knives I've ever used because of it's compact size and lightweight handle material. The lock is very sturdy and this knife although small excels at basic cutting needs, such as boxes, rope, plastic wrappers, etc. I have even used mine for camping and fishing and it's sturdy enough to whittle a hot dog stick :). It's not going to replace bigger blade tasks but for most it's surprisingly competent. The scales on the handle are very good and this is some of the best molding you will ever see. The steel is vg10 in the vanilla version and by my use very sturdy and nothing to scoff at. I had great edge retention and no corrosion. I do of course clean my knife and oil it occasionally. If you've got big fingers like I do it's a two handed open or an awkward one handed. Doesn't bother me because this isn't a tactical knife, it's and everyday pocket knife and a damn good one. If you don't lose it 😉 I got the green color and liked it so much I put it in my collection and ordered another black one for my Keychain. I have included some pics with a Civi baby banter and a Mecarmy EK33S for size comparison. You can see the ladybug's blade is not that much smaller than the baby banter, although the blade is thinner. I highly recommend this knife for a edc or 'pocket knife' as us old timers refer to them. This is one of three Spyderco Ladybug3 Plain Edge knives I purchased for comparison (and use). The Ladybug3 is a "keychain" knife - no pocket clip, but a lanyard hole in the end of the handle intended for a typical bead-chain loop (or split-ring) to snap onto your keys. This is no poorly made, flimsy, quick-to-dull toy, but a well made, strong and useful beyond its size tool for cutting lots of stuff. It happens to be quite small, yet feels good (useable) in-hand and it works. There are really nice, expensive "gentleman's knife" choices from traditional slip joint makers that can do such tasks but excel as 'pocket jewelry'; the Spyderco Ladybug is more utilitarian - light, one-handed, and not-so-conspicuous. Take that Abalone-handled Peanut to a wedding; take the Ladybug to the office. If you want something a bit bigger (handle-wise) to hold onto, look to Spyderco's Dragonfly series made in the same three steel choices. Both Ladybug and Dragonfly have comparable blade lengths/shapes, the Dragonfly gives a longer/larger handle to grip. The three Ladybug3's were: The ZDP189 super-steel version, the VG10 standard-high-quality-steel version, and the H1 rust-proof-steel version. The points for comparison were edge retention and ease of sharpening. The use test was soft-wood whittling and Every Day Carry usage (cutting open those Amazon boxes, cutting tape, cardboard, etc.) Yes, not the best choice of whittling knife - I use a 2 blade Congress - but a choice for steel comparison. The result: Each knife has it's distinct advantage, so one must choose wisely based on what you will do with it. > All 3 are easy to open with one-hand, and quick to task. I use a short colorful lanyard loop to find and fetch from my jeans 'watch pocket' > The Ladybug3 is the well-made, perfect size for a handy man or woman for most everyday urban cutting tasks. > The ZDP-189 is the most expensive, due to a steel that really does hold its edge - I've only needed to strop it. While it may be more difficult to sharpen if really allowed to dull, modern diamond plates or rods do a quick job. The ZDP-189 Ladybug3 is the one for someone who wants that edge to be sharp and can't get to sharpening for a while. While it might seem this edge retention is good for whittling, Brittleness associated with hardness can be a concern, and it is much better to be able to quickly sharpen and strop and get back to it. So I conclude this is the light use ever-sharp pocket pal, not a put to hard use steel. > The H-1 is the next highest price, due to a steel that really will not rust - however, it is softer, so it will show scratches and the edge will dull the most quickly of the three; the serrated version due to its added work hardening processing will hold its edge quite well. The H-1 takes sharpening quite well... about like AUS-8, a good quality, general use stainless. The yellow handle helps it from 'getting lost', and suggesting safety/work versus tactical intent. This is the one for any who are around water or use their knives with that which can corrode. > The VG10 is the standard for price and performance. Edge holding is in-between the H1 and ZDP189. While it can show rust spots if 'put away wet', especially after cutting an orange, etc., in most uses and with most users a wipe-down with a damp paper towel will prevent any corrosion, and most will find the VG10 to hold its edge quite well, and not quite as easy to sharpen as H-1 or AUS-8, it sharpens more quickly than ZDP-189 or other "super-steels". The VG10 is the one for most users - including that opportune stick-whittling or carving initials in a heart (not condoning!)

Michelle‘s brother Steve Like the little Blade and the lock works well. Very good ergonomics, for such a small knife. Nice steel, plenty sharp, it's tiny, but with practice it can still be opened with one hand. Small but still easy enough to find in your pocket. Typical Spyderco fit and finish. Only downside is price, but worth it, if you can afford it.

Amazing, but tiny knife for edc. VG-10 steel, amazing. Extremely sharp, out of the box, cuts like a razor! Cuts through most things without any effort or pressure (I lightly ran it across my skin and later I found a bleeding line; one time, I accidentally cut myself while closing the knife with one hand when it lightly shut closed onto a thumb via spring force only, bled a decent amount... so sharp). The point is okay sharp, not sure if this is a clip-point or a drop-point or whatever it is, its decent. HANDLE WITH CARE. The lockback lock type is very strong and solid. Does not wiggle and will be able to take significant force. When unlocking to close, especially with one hand, it is very easy to put your fingers in the path of the blade. The spring takes over the closing action of the blade when it is about 45 deg with the handle. The grip/handle is nice, although I wish I got the metal one, this one is much cheaper and still great. The texture feel good, but I wish it had the texture all the way around or at least to the edges of the big face. It has some grip on the sides where you would want them too. If you bang the handle on hard things it'll eventually break somehow, probably brittle breakage of the corners. I dont really like where/how the keychain hole is placed, but with the design, you cant put it anywhere better (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I use a micro clip thing with it and I just prefer if it was more at the end of the knife handle so it would spin around the clip more. Allows me to more easily rotate it in my pocket or while taking it out of my pocket, without the weight/mass of the rest of the keys/keychain causing any hindrances. Tighten-able screws for some adjustment. Fits and feels great reverse grip under the pinky and ring finger, although they are weaker fingers. Blade pointing up with handles under the index and middle fingers, I think it needs something extra at the bottom end to hold onto (like my clip) or it doesn't feel comfortable. Feels great in the sort of xacto knife cutting position. I wish it locked both open and closed =(, just personal preference for keeping it in my pocket all day while being active or messing with my pockets all the time.

Having read many knife reviews and acquiring a collection of Gerber, Case and Buck Knives, I decided to try the much touted Spyderco brand. I've heard it repeated that the steel in the former knife brands is "cheap", but that the steel in Spyderco is high quality. I think that is rather odd, especially in light of the Gerber Prodigy 31-000558 Tanto knife that according to a review, is issued in the military for field use only. Makes me wonder whether the military is known to issue cheap bladed knives, or does that not count with the Prodigy because that blade is so dang thick? ;) I have both of these, and I must say that the edge on the Spyderco Ladybug is sharper than the blade on the Prodigy. Not sure that matters to the one carrying the Prodigy, because the bulk and style of that knife and blade overcomes not having the sharpest blade. This blade is made in Japan. The shape makes it more substantial than that of my most comparably sized knife, a Case Texas toothpick. It is sharp and very easy to open one-handed because of the hole in the blade, and it seems to lock open well. I had read a review prior on the Spyderco Pacific Salt plain edge, where the reviewer said that the knife seemed to "flop" closed when unlocked. I think I know what the reviewer meant, because when this Ladybug is unlocked, it feels loose and requires virtually no effort to close. As other reviewers have said, the color shown in the picture is of an older model. I call this color grey. The handle material feels cheap, especially compared to other knives that don't have plastic/vinyl-type handles. The Gerber Prodigy and Gators both have similar materials for the handle, but the quality on those is superior - however, if you like something very lightweight, you would like the handle on this Ladybug. It IS a small knife, after all. I wouldn't use it on a keyring, as I wouldn't want my keys in the way of my use of the knife. This is a good, sneaky, subversive and utilitarian knife, certainly not at all threatening to look at. I like the spider on the blade, nice touch. I do expect the Japanese steel to perform well, and think this is a very useful knife to have. Easy to carry, but also seems as though it would be easy to lose. It feels weightless, so you wouldn't know when it is or is not actually there in your pocket. I will probably attach something to the hole so that it will have more of a feel to it. Cell phone strap, lanyard or something like that.

The Spyderco Ladybug has been around for decades and has always been a top-notch keychain knife. But back in the day, it was only available in a 3/4 serrated version and in AUS-8 steel. Don't get me wrong, AUS 8 is a fine knife steel and even what many would consider to be a premium steel in a small keychain knife, but VG-10 is a decided step up in quality. More importantly, the plain edge blade makes this knife quite a bit more handy. The ergonomics have also been improved with the jimping on the back of the blade where the spyder-hole meets the handle. This jimping, along with the overall shape and texture of the handle, really allows a positive grip on this small knife. Combine the very sharp and usable blade with good grips and ergonomics and a very strong and well made lock, and you end up with a small knife capable of cutting far beyond its size. This is one keychain knife capable of doing serious work! I've carried full size Benchmade knives in addition to my Ladybug keychain knife, and I've also gone at times with just the Ladybug. I'd say that this small knife is capable of 99% of the tasks I use my larger knifes for - I rarely ever felt as if I needed a bigger knife when I had my Ladybug with me. If you've carried a one-hand-opening knife on you before, you'll find it darn near life-changing. Seriously. Even if you can't imagine what you'd use it for now, you'll end up using it at least once a day, and after a while, you'll start to feel "naked" without your trusting knife in your pocket. The only tool (arguably) more useful is a pocket flashlight. I splurged on a Fenix mini LD01 CREE Q5 80 Lumens LED Flashlight - black color, using one AAA battery and now use it daily; it's my constant companion when I'm dressed. Get this Ladybug knife along with a keychain flashlight and I guarantee you'll consider them both some of the very best tools you ever bought. Oh, one last thing. This purple version of the knife looks like a much deeper and darker purple in the picture than in real life. When the knife arrived, the scales looked closer to a magenta or a light plum than an iris or indigo color. If you're a woman, it probably won't matter. If you're a guy, you may want to rethink your color choice.

This knife is my first from Spyderco, and it is by far my most practical EDC. It fits perfectly on my keychain -- just slightly smaller than my car key when closed -- and it is just as light as a key too. The thumb hole on the blade works well for me, though I could imagine it being a little too small for someone with big hands, and the transition from the closed to open position is incredibly smooth. In fact, sometimes I find myself mindlessly opening and closing it as I'm thinking or daydreaming. The mid-lock is effective, but does not allow for easy 1-handed closing (without risking a finger), especially since the knife doesn't have a choil that could cover a whole finger. Although the blade is small and fairly thin, it comes razor-sharp out of the package, and I've already used it a number of times for simple, everyday tasks; however, I don't think it'd hold up well under strenuous cutting. The only downside I can think of with this knife is that you need to be careful pulling your keys from your pockets or bag -- I once grabbed it by the spine and opened it without realizing (thinking it was a key), but luckily noticed before closing my hand around the edge. I would highly recommend this knife to anyone.

Muy ligera para el día a día. Muy buen corte. Ojo, es bastante pequeña. Para uso ocasional para salir del paso. Para uso regular mejor una medida mayor. Tiene un precio elevado supuestamente justificado por su calidad.

Habe dieses Messer 3 Monate in der 5. Jeanstasche getragen. Ca. 60 Mal benutzt für Kartons, Verpackungen etc. Als die Klinge mir in den Zeigefinger schnitt, merkte ich das der Backlock nicht mehr funktioniert. Für den Preis unmöglich. Nicht kaufen, wenn ihr eure Finger braucht.

was soll man da noch schreiben? Meine Frau ist begeistert... vor allem von der Farbe. Rattenscharf das Teil (das Messer meine ich diesmal), leicht, im geöffneten Zustand hat die Klinge kein Spiel, butterweicher Klingengang. Eben Spyderco. Einfach nur empfehlenswert wenn man/frau etwas in dieser Größe sucht!
