Can each of the retractable devices support a 16 oz load? I need it to extend and retract a speaker cable in tandem with a motorized speaker mount.

Yes just adjust the tensioner correctly or double up on them.

Anyway to get the tension less intense?

Yes, you need to adjust the tensioner on the strong that connects to the cable. You adjust it to where you want the wire to be pulled to so for example the strong under the tensioner pieces would be hanging the cable that much lower
