No issue connecting to your tripod!!! Works great.

Does this grip work on an eos r?

NO.. this does not fit the R, It has an extra pin on the bottom for a hole the R does not have. I made the mistake of buying it and having to return it. Beach Camera is dead wrong on this.

Does it have any buttons for taking photos while the camera is rotated in portrait mode like normal battery grips?

No. By the way, this is not a battery grip..only an extension grip.
